An extraordinary writer, Richard Ben Cramer, just died. In addition to political journalism, he also wrote about baseball. Here is a link to a great article on Ted Williams published in Esquire:

Here's the first chapter from his "controversial" book on Dimaggio.

I bought that book at a used bookstore for $3.95.

It is a tremendous book on the DiMaggio family, really portrays well, the times and era he grew up in.

A few days after finishing it I realized that Joe at 16-17 yrs old was just starting to play ball. At 22 he was unquestionably the best player in baseball, an amazing journey for him. In only five years!!

His life after baseball is really no different, just an amazing story. I highly recommend this book.
