Negro League Players

PostMon Mar 18, 2013 1:03 am

I think Negro League players should only appear in pre-WWII leagues and should not be included in post WWII leagues.

Well, since in theory after Jackie Robinson the color barrier was broken the negro leagues ceased to exist. It took a few years for them all to die off but logically should not be included in the post era set that has Bob Gibson, Henry Aaron, Willie Mays, etc. I never play those subsets so does not really impact me so ...

Perhaps you should reshape this thread as a poll. Then you could submit poll results to Strato email after a week or two.
I am sure once they see the will of the community they will make a quick and responsive adjustment.

If the game was only made up of sub-sets that would make sense, but its not. Why shouldn't they be included with the rest of the all time greats?

Well of course I'm only refering to subset leagues. And since all the negro league cards are based on pre-1950 performances, then they're not in the post-WW2 era and should not be included in post WW2 SUBSET leagues.

I have not noticed anyone on this thread even hinting that they should not be included in ATG.
I have not noticed anyone on this thread saying ATG only consists of subsets.

A careful reading of the initial post by RickRanger indicates he does not believe they should exist in both the pre-WWII and the post-WWII subsets. It makes sense. A card such as the 1927 Ruth card exists in the pre-WWII subset because he played before WWII. At least that is what I would assume. Since for the most part the negro leagues disappeared after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier which was shortly after WWII I assume RickRanger does not believe those cards should be included in the post-WWII set. If I have misinterpreted RickRanger then he should correct my interpretation of his post. Assuming my interpretation of what he is saying is correct I agree with him. If my interpretation is incorrect then definitely correct me as I may be agreeing with something I did not intend to.

According to the Negroleaguebaseball.com historic timeline (a very informative website by the way), the formal end of the "major" Negro League circuits were as follows:

1949
The Negro American League becomes the only "major" Negro League circuit still in operation.

1952
By the end of the season more than 150 former Negro League players have been integrated into organized baseball. Without its greatest stars, and struggling with low attendance, the great era of Negro League baseball comes to a close.

This, by the way, has nothing to do with the above discussion. Just a bit of interesting baseball history.

If you are going to be posting useful and interesting stuff like this we gotta get your post count up from 18. :D
Always wondered a little about exactly how long those leagues lasted after the integration but was too lazy to do the research. So thanks for enabling my laziness. Look forward to reading more posts from you jugslavin.

RickRanger,

My apologies as I did misunderstand what you were saying, as Valen so eloquently  pointed out.
