would the pinch hit logic work if the columns said "pinch hit for vs" instead of "don't pinch hit for vs"?

I doubt it. It doesn't work very well as is, to be sure. But I wouldn't want to give HAL an opportunity to start pinch-hitting in the first or second innings, It probably would be too difficult to expand the options so that one player could be used to pinch hit only in clutch situations, while another only in leadoff situations, etc.

As is, that entire column is useless now (to my knowledge)....maybe "pinch hit for vs" could have 3 columns

A. anytime after "X" inning

B. only with men on base

C. only after "X" inning when trailing

something like this...anything would be better than a column that to all that I've messaged agree is useless as is

The extra options might be good. But at some point it is possible to get so many options configuring could get confusing for the casual player. Not saying this in particular crosses that line but it is a line that Strato programmers have to keep in mind.

Regarding whether the column should be pinch hit vs or don't pinch hit vs is probably irrelevant. From a programming perspective it is the same if statement with the code for the if and the else flip flopped. Results don't change.

I've always kind of wanted the option of "text me in real time so I can tell HAL what to do" in many of these situations.

Pinch hitting is a joke. Should be a "never" hit against button so guys like Gates Brown don't stay in the game against lefties like he does now.

This wouldn't solve pinch hitting completely, but it would help with the wrong side of the platoon getting too many at bats.
