Each new version of on line SOM lends itself to another version of my legendary fat and slow theme team, the Thundering Herd! The ATG7 version did not disappoint. Bolstered by improved starters, the barrel chested Kirby Puckett and the aptly named Tubby Scales, the Herd! registered their first championship since ATG3.http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/820402
Where I could not find fat players I chose slow players. Marion's e 1-10 was about as slow as I could get for a shortstop. Likewise my catchers were e 1-8, as were other backups Averill, Majeski, and Carty. As for fat shortstops I could not think of any. Bucky Dent? Larvell Blanks? I would not call those guys fat, really. Others I have used on previous teams include Joe Torre,
sorry, interrupted by a patient...Mule Haas- a slow center fielder, Heavy Johnson, Kevin Mitchell, Fat Freddy Fitsimmons, Aurelio Lopez, Max Bishop...Others I thought about using that were provided in the new set included Mo Vaughn, Prince or Cecil Fielder, CC Sabathia, David Wells. Any others I have missed?
I should mention that I have found it advantageous to put the Herd! in Dunn since their best player is clearly Ruth, and their pitching tends to lean to the portside...{portly side?} Therefore guys like Torrre and Heavy Johnson are less valuable than say Boog powell or Prince Fielder, power hitting lefties. Scales and Puckett destroy lefties, however, which helps some on the road. Also, as with any theme team the higher the cap, the greater the disadvantage for the theme team if not in a league where all others have the same disadvantages. The sweet spot for the sucrose craving Herd! seems to be 100 million. Less and you can't use enough of the good players, more and they are buried.
