Why did Wine start at 2B??????

PostTue Jun 25, 2013 9:24 am

I'm not complaining, but curious why Bobby Wine started at 2B for the injured Alomar instead of Molitor in game 2.
I have no backup listed and, Molitor is the DH against LHP and 3B against RHP.
game 1 - Alomar injured -Wine and Matt Williams play 3B, Molitor moves to 2B

game 2 -Wine starts at 2B (he is a SS, 3B) while Molitor is the DH.

game 3 -Molitor stats at 2B, Matt Williams inserted at 3B

What am I missing?

HAL won't move your DH during the 3 games @ night.

Thanks, that's an odd rule.

I doubt it's a rule, more of a HAL oddity.

Any idea what range/error rating is used when a player is out of position? Looks like Wine went 2 for 2 in 2b(X) chances

Not a baseball rule but an HAL programming rule. I think I remember Garcia covering this topic in one of his weekly blog things. Hal will not move your DH when creating a lineup even if you do list the DH as a backup somewhere else.

Here is the official discussion.

I believe it's a glitch. If you have Piazza as a DH and your catcher gets hurt, Hal will keep Piazza at DH and put some other random player at catcher.

You cannot call it a glitch since clearly it is designed to work that way. The post by Garcia clearly states the computer will not move a player out of the DH slot. Now if you want to argue poor design that is different. But you would need to take your case to Strato either through the wish list forum or sending them an email and make your case for changing the computer lineup logic. Good luck on that though as it would require them to admit they made a bad decision.

Going forward having been clearly told the computer manager will not move a player from DH to a different position I would say the strategy of using a catcher as DH is not an advisable one. And if used everyone should be aware of the weakness related to it and be willing to live with that. I personally would program the lineup logic different but as a manager here tend to have the approach generally attributed to umpires. If it is consistent and I know what to expect in advance I am going to accept it and plan accordingly.

OK. I agree, poor design.
Now, how about this.
I have Piazza and Campanella in a $200 league. I start Piazza vs. righties and Campy vs. lefties.
I have remove Piazza for D with lead, and Campy listed as D replacement.
Campanella gets hurt.
Next game, I have a lead and Hal replaces Piazza at catcher with Chipper Jones.
Is this poor design or a glitch?

I had this happen last night. You need to go to your settings and unclick the "remove for defensive replacement" for the duration of Campy's injury. Apparently HAL gives high priority to removing the starter for Def Replacement.

I am playing Cubs in a theme league. Have Hack in CF and Edmonds at 1b, with Edmonds as def rep for Wilson with a lead. Edmonds got hurt, and, because I had Hack set to remove for defense, HAL put Cleo James in CF for him. Not much of an improvement.
