Relative Newbie - Few Questions

PostThu Aug 22, 2013 10:03 am

I'm a relative newbie to this game (just completing my first season) and I have a few questions.

It is looking like (barring a total collapse) I will make the playoffs in my first season. My question - 12 team league - I know 4 teams make the playoffs - 3 division winners and a WC. How do the playoff matches get determined - ie - like real baseball, can the WC team draw the team from its own division, if that's the team with the best record? What happens if the WC has a better record than one of the division winners? How many playoff games get played in a day?

A question - let's say I have my division wrapped up after 159 games. I have an ace SP (with about 25 wins), but the rest of my SP are about .500 at best. Should I rest my ace? He would normally pitch game 161. Reason I'm asking is to ensure he's ready for game 1 of the playoffs (not sure if having him start game 161 would mean he can't go till game 2-3 of the playoffs).

Also, in addition to playing in an 80M league, I'm also in a league with a 137M cap. It seems in the league with the higher cap, I'm having players injured in almost every series. I've had few injuries at the lower cap. Is it common for there to be more injuries as the cap goes up (and therefore it's more important to not have 500k backups to round out your roster at higher caps).

Thanks for the advice! Would appreciate some answers to the playoff questions so I can prepare... hoping I lock up the division tonight!

season ends on Friday. Playoffs begin on Monday giving pitchers two rest days. 2 games on Monday, 2 games on Tuesday -after that it's 1 per day.

Injuries are not related to salary caps.

Thanks for the info... didn't realize I will have to wait till Monday for the playoffs (that'll make it a first - looking forward to Monday).

(Hopefully I haven't jinxed myself now asking these questions - but I am 4 games in front with 6 to go - albeit the next three are against the 2nd place team - but I do have my ace ready for game 1).

The weird thing is the last couple series against this rival, he hasn't even pitched Pedro, his ace, against me (nor is he scheduled to this time).

So to confirm - if there's two 'rest' days - even if I pitch my ace on Friday, in the 2nd last game, I should still be good to start him game one of the playoffs (assuming I do in fact get there)? Don't want to make a mistake on this.

Thanks.

If he is a SP* he can start game 161 and game 1. A regular SP would start game 2

He's a SP*.

My team. Any thoughts (the good, the bad, the ugly - which would be my defence).

If he is a SP* then it may not matter. Even a SP* can only pitch 2 games in a 7 game series. There are no travel days.
So he can go games 1 and 5 or even if he pitches last game of season he can still go in game 2 or 3. Then he would also go game 6 or 7. If he pitches 3 and 7 with the single off day before finals he could start games 3 and 7 in finals.

Now where it might make a difference is if you care when and where he starts. For example if you have home field advantantage and want him pitching at home because he is especially well suited for home park and poorly suited for road park then games 2 and 6 is where you want to slot him so both games are at home.

Or if you want to make sure your ace matches up against the opposing ace in game 1 then you should avoid throwing him in game 162.

Now if we had travel days like real MLB then having your ace ready for game 1 would be crucial.
