BP singles

PostTue Nov 05, 2013 2:14 pm

I hate BP single rolls.
They always seem to arrive with 1 out and a runner on 3rd.
You get a fly ball out and the runner can't advance.
What a dumb invention. From home plate to 275 feet out in every direction, where most singles occur, every ballpark is identical. So there is no logic for the park to have any effect on singles.
The fact that more singles occur in one park over another has more to do with pitchers, hitters and defenders.
The fact that 1 out of every 22 dice rolls is a BP single result is bogus.

Ballpark singles are intended to account for the fact that some parks have larger foul grounds than others, or slower infields, etc. There is a very real, and quite repeatable, effect on batting average from park to park.

Also, Coors Field may well be identical to every other ballpark from foul line to foul line out to 275', but the fact that there is a hell of a lot more acreage in play in fair territory outside of that area means that the outfielders in Coors have to play a lot deeper. There is also the issue of there being a hell of a lot less air in the 200' or so above the dirt within that quarter of a 275 foot radius circle, which tends to make the ball get to where it's going a bit quicker.

And don't even get me started on prevailing winds, humidity, height of the mound, hitters' background, etc.

Your argument is a non-starter, Dan.

You are right. I just remembered this play by play.

Announcer: Ground ball up the middle, Ozzie with the diving stab, throw to first, OUT!
Analyst: To bad for Jones, that would have been a single in just about every park but here.

Not much play by play in a dice roll.

The single is there because the foul ball went into the stands and gave the hitter another swing, as opposed to an out.
