Is it safe to assume that you agree that a fast paced draft favors those that have done a lot of them?

The only way to appreciate a fast timed draft is to experience a agonizing long one...One should be prepared for the draft whether you are a veteran or new to the draft world....

So what is the proper time range per pick?

There is no real "average" pick time.

Most of your picks can be made before you are even on the clock. Those picks are more or less instant.
Even first time managers will be making many picks instaneously... some picks are just no-brainers.

On the other side, using the full clock 5 times in draft shouldn't upset anyone, although the experienced managers will probably do it 2 or less times per draft.

For the fraction of picks which are not instant, you need to regroup a bit.
Once you are 20 seconds into pick, you pretty much aren't going to make a perfect pick.
At that point, its time to focus on taking someone who will help the team period.
Especially in the late rounds when you are picking guys that are getting 40-50 ABs or 30 IPs over the season.

Because if you are 40 seconds into a paticular pick, everyone in the draft room knows you don't know who you want and already know the pick thats coming will be underwhelming.

45-60 seconds is an excellent pace. I don't think there is such a thing as a proper time frame. That's why they have options for pick duration. An example though is let's say you are picking near the beginning or end of a round. You make your pick, now you don't have another pick for around twenty picks. At two minutes a pick, do you really want to wait around forty minutes for your next pick? Two minutes a pick times 300 picks, that's ten hours.

That 100 meter dash sure was fun to watch but I wish they would run slower so I could enjoy it more. ;)

Man, I wanted to reply to that with a really cynical chauvinistic comment regarding marital sex, but I won't, I just won't.

There might be a difference between this and a race.

Too bad there isn't a 100 meterdash on Sunday to save us from a long boring football game. ;)

Yeah, my comparison was lame but much of the enjoyment of a quicker draft is the rush of knowing the clock is ticking in front of you and others drafting, applying a little pressure with each pick.

Some LIVE events have a clock and bonus/panic time feature.

So you would have a short clock (say 30 or 45 seconds) and maybe 2-3 minutes of extra time you can use whenever.

So the first time you are having trouble with a decision, you have plenty of buffer. But once its gone, its gone.

Biggest problem with this idea: implementing it would probably cause some drafts to crash.
