Defensive replacements

PostSat Feb 01, 2014 1:22 pm

Does anybody think they will ever fix the logic that goes into defensive subs. I have Wambsgans (2b), Jamieson (LF) and Hockett (RF) listed as my late inning def subs. Jamieson pinch hit for my pitcher in the 7th (when I was losing), so he was out of the picture. Hockett pinch hit for my pitcher in the 9th (when my team went ahead), and Hale (my 2nd baseman) made the last out that inning. Instead of bringing in Wambs for Hale and leaving in Hockett, HAL brings in Holland (4e10) for Heath (4e14) and leaves Hale (3e32) in the game. I simply do not understand this "logic"!

Mike I do know if you mark a guy as Remove for Defensive Replacement, HAL will remove him, even if the defensive replacement you desire to replace him has already been burned in the game.
In other words, HAL WILL remove him, regardless of whether you have a viable replacement available.

I think HAL just takes the first available replacement, working down from the top of your roster (that is, the catchers), if you have the "Remove for Defensive Replacement" button selected for a player, or if that player gets injured. Regardless of who you have listed for defensive replacements in the Team Strategy page. And I think the process that HAL uses for the "Remove" button supersedes the process that HAL would use for the Team Strategy page replacements.

In one $200M team, I had Biz Mackey and Roger Bresnahan repeatedly getting used as 3B replacements for Ed Delahanty, because I had the "Remove" button selected for Delahanty. Things got more sensible after I deselected that button and so HAL just used the Team Strategy page, where I had Lindstrom identified as the late inning 3B defensive replacement.

But the craziness still came up when Delahanty got injured -- back to Mackey or Bresnahan at 3B. And I only had the two catchers on that team.

I have a feeling that the fix for this is a deeper in the code kind of thing, and is much harder than adding some nice gimmick to one of the webpages. Hopefully, once the live draft is pretty functional (and that actually is pretty close - I've only had good experiences with it so far, but I know there have a been a couple of stability things show up.), SOM can move this issue up on their list of things to do.

This might seem odd, but with such great hitting, especially at the higher caps, I don't even bother with defensive replacements, as I usually have 1s up the middle with only an occasional 2, and 2s or 3s at the corner IF and OF spots, so defensive replacements only give marginal improvement, when the odds of having an x-chart hit to the player are relatively small, especially at 1B and the corner OF spots. When I first started playing online, I used to use them often, but I got tired of my opponents taking late inning leads and then having to bat some 50 or 75 cent player for one of my stud sluggers who was pulled for late inning defense. With literally no lead being safe, why take hitters out of the game for better D?

I wish it was as simple as having all "good" defensive and guys with lots of offensive potential, but this is a franchise theme and as you know Bernie, sometimes the d or the o is questionable and you wanna get the late inning guys in... if you can. Andy, I appreciate the input as well (especially as this is your league) and I have since "unchecked" Heath, hopefully this will provide HAL with less decisions to make. Thanks guys.

Mike
