The return of Booooog Powell

PostThu Nov 13, 2014 12:37 am

Whenever I think of the 3 HR strategy my mind drifts to Earl Weaver and the Baltimore Orioles. And the first player name I think of was the big guy Boog Powell. Or as the fans often said it Boooooooooog Powell. Were they booing or in fact cheering him? Truth be told at times a little of both depending on how recently he had come through on one of those 3 run HRs. It would be fun to see what percentage of his HRs were in fact 3 run bombs.

Is it possible he has been reincarnated?

Boog Powell, OF, A's
Powell led all of the Minor Leagues in on-base percentage in 2014. His showing in the AFL has proven to some that his .451 OBP, or his .343 average, in the regular season was not an A-ball fluke. Powell's .425 OBP is third and his .323 average places him fifth. He's even shown a little extra-base pop, good enough for the fifth-best OPS in the Fall League. What Powell does for an encore in Double-A will go a long way in continuing to raise the stock of the A's No. 20 prospect.

On related note has anyone come across an internet published study on which hitters in history got the biggest bang for their massive swing. In other words if a guy hit 500 HRs and 5 of them 5 of them were grans slams that would be 1 %. If 50 of them were 3 run HRs that would be 10%. And if 100 of them were 2 run homers that would be 20%.

So on a percentage basis who has hit the most of each? Or on a simpler note if you remove all RBIs from all other methods than a blast over the fence who would have the most HR based RBI in total. And who would have the most by ratio. By that I mean you drove in 150 runs on 100 HRS that would be a 150/100 ratio which simplifies to a 1.5/1 ratio. Who would have the highest ration in history?
