No, not much of a player. He did bat 1.000 in the World Series (Just like Bruce Bochy and Tim Flannery). I remember him because he managed the Pirates in the mid-50's when I was becoming a baseball fan. The story below is a great read, though. And how can you not love a man who claims that his biggest achievement in baseball was being released to make room for Roy Campanella?
