Comiskey Park Trivia Questions

PostWed Feb 17, 2016 12:35 pm

Old Comiskey Park was the home of the Chicago White Sox from 1910 through 1990.

A roof topped the grandstand in the outfield - except in dead center field where the scoreboard sat.

Hitting a home run onto the roof at Comiskey Park was considered quite an achievement.

Question 1 - Who were the first six visiting players to hit a home run onto the Comiskey roof?

Question 2 - Who holds the career record for Comiskey roof home runs (and how many)?

I challenge you to answer without consulting the internet first.

The answers to the first question consist of the usual suspects - the second may be a challenge.

Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio

Ron Kittle 3

Probably went to far in time for first one. Did any Negro League teams play at Comiskey? Assume second was a White Sox player.

Home plate was moved up in 1983 so there were a lot more rooftop HRs hit. Very few Centerfield shots. Richie Zisk was one. Dick Allen possibly another.

Yes, in 1983 Comiskey's home plate was moved up 8 feet bringing the roof a bit closer.

Between the two answers to question 1 you have them all - Ruth, Gehrig, Greenberg, Foxx, Williams, and Mantle.

Ron Kittle did have the most roof shots - 7 in total - all after the plate was moved closer (although that may not be the only reason he was the rooftop champ - he was one strong fly ball hitting dude).

Why the heck doesn't Kittle have a decent WhiteSox card (his rookie of the year?) instead of that crap-o-matic card from the last half of '86 with the Yankees?
