Substitution

PostTue Mar 15, 2016 8:28 am

How do I get HAL to move Simmons to leftfield from centerfield for Beaumont and bring Virdon in to cf? I just can't remember. Right now I have Simmons to lf, Virdon to cf, and Melillo to 2b. The only one HAL did was Virdon to cf yanking Simmons.

So starting OF is
LF Beumont
CF Simmons

I think what you need to do is list
1st defensive replacement Virdon CF
2nd defensive replacement Simmons LF

Now to me that is backwards as in my mind if Virdon takes Simmons place in CF he is out of the game. But as I understand the way Strat programmed it the above is the way it works.

I think you can also use ...
3rd defensive replacement Virdon CF
4th defensive replacement Simmons LF

The magical combo is the new player is listed as first replacement and the player sliding over listed as the next replacement. Addtionally as I understand you have to pair these as either the first 2 defensive replacements or the last 2.

So the following would not work and I suspect would result in Simmons being removed from game.
2nd defensive replacement Virdon CF
3rd defensive replacement Simmons LF

Sounds bass ackwards for sure so it probably makes sense to HAL. Thanks Valen. I wonder why it ignored Melillo to 2nd as the 3rd replacement.

I've always found that you need to list the player already in the game first, and then the replacement:

1st defensive replacement: Simmons to LF
2nd defensive replacement: Virdon to CF

the logic being (I would think) that if you list Virdon first, he would replace Simmons directly and Simmons would be gone.

3rd defensive replacement: Melillo to 2b

This usually works for me, but it also assumes differing ideas of when to bring in those replacements. When winning, yes, but not by too much and and not by too little.

And by all means, do not check the "remove for defensive sub with lead"; it is too stringent, and in the case of catchers rendered bulletproof by the injury of his backstop brethren the catcher will be taken out (if the box is checked) to be replaced by lord only knows who.

Even though Virdon is listed for cf only, what if I list him to sub in lf? Doesn't a 1 cf play as a 1 lf or rf? Beaumont with his lf2 and +2 arm is who needs replacing. George I have it the way you say and it isn't working. I'll try Valen idea. If it don't work I'll try Virdon in left. If that don't work, screw it. It probably won't make any difference anyways.

Directly from the Strat "help" header:

"To define a "defensive double-switch":

Defensive double-switches must be defined as a pair. They can be defined as the first and second defensive replacements or as the third and fourth defensive replacement. Any other combination will not work. For instance, a double-switch cannot be defined as the second and third replacements because the computer manager will not recognize that you wish to make a double-switch.

Then, the player who is (expected to be) in the game already should be listed second, at the position he should move to. The defensive replacement on the bench who you want to come in should be listed first, at his desired position. "

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Finally after 18 games the team was in a position to sub while winning. Broke an 8 game losing streak and all the players were healthy. Valen, you got it right. Thanks guys. Now the team is healthy it needs to win some games. On all my teams I've been bit by injuries and I rarely have even a 2 catcher. On one team Dahlen has been injured 4 times in 30 games. Good times are a comin.
