There are at least thirty-two starters in ATG 8 that can steal bases. Some time ago I posted here some actual data for these fellows for which we have no control on their stealing, which was my point.
In 480 seasons these 32 stole 1053 bases in 1463 attempts for a 72% success rate. Not bad. The leaders are Amos Rusie (21 seasons) with an 83.3% success rate in 60 attempts and Ray Caldwell ’22 (56 seasons) at 83.1% in 362 tries.
LeRoy Matlock was among the worst stealing at 56% in 125 tries (31 seasoons).
Later I expanded the stats of Amos to include an additional 25 seasons and his performance improved to an 84% success rate (150 SB in 179 attempts).
For comparison Ty Cobb ’12 is successful in 75% of his attempts, Vince Coleman @ 75% and Maury Wells ’62 @ 74%.
