THE ANTI DALE MURRAY LEAGUE - NO RELIEVER ABOVE AN R2

PostFri May 18, 2018 5:47 pm

Just started an 80 million dollar DH league with the following restriction:

You can never have a reliever rated above an R2, that includes Starter/Relievers. There is no limit to the price of your pitchers, just their endurance rating.

I'd like to see how it shakes out.

O.K., looking over the pitcher pool the part about starting pitchers not being able to be an R3 or greater might not work. So it would have to be a gentleman's agreement that starters cannot be used as relievers.

Thoughts???

Rich, I designed a set of players specifically to address this need. We ran a 24-league with the set (currently 144 games into the season): http://365.strat-o-matic.com/league/436141

For reference, here's the link to sign-up thread for that league: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=643584

The name of the player set is: Classic ATG (1911 to 1993) minus RP (http://365.strat-o-matic.com/playerset/browse/3873)

Removing the R3, R4, and R5 cards has already been tried (look for the ATG "Light" Player Set). IMO that doesn't really address the Super-RP issue since you can crank 250+ IP from a good R2 (that's what luckyman did in this league: http://365.strat-o-matic.com/league/433517

FWIW, there hasn't been much overusage of S/R in relief roles in the Requiem for Dale Murray league:
Webster McDonald (NeL) - 218 IP
Jim Merritt ('65) - 154 IP
Red Ames ('11) - 121 IP

Thanks for the links Riggo. I am also planning on starting another league with no RP over $3 million to see how that goes.

Petro and I are in a league together (same division) and he has Murray and Sutter. So that should be real intersting to see how that combo ends up numbers wise. I have used them before but NOT as super relievers, I'd have to scout for the team.

Well, the easiest place to find examples of Murray and Sutter in the same pen would be from the 2016 teams of your buddy tmfw30. For quite some time you could guarantee that he would draft one or the other first.

I only picked a pen with these guys to amuse myself given the anti-Murray league you are trying to start. Just an added bonus that we are in the same division! I'd rather the Murray card not be in the set but since he is... Sutter is probably a legitimate R3 but I question how often Murray relieved for 4 or more innings at a clip in 1974. In any event, Murray's value diminishes as a function of league cap, at 140 M or higher he is just another pitcher. He's only a monster at 100M or less and since Rich only plays 80M caps, I can see where Murray would be a terror to him. Extending that logic to its' conclusion, having Murray and Sutter in the same pen should permanently traumatize Coach Rich.

Definitely guilty of that sin. At $80m it's a waste of money, but at $100m I've used a Sutter/Murray pen, where they both occupy every bullpen role except L/R specialist, to pretty devastating effect. Spend nothing on starting pitching, load your lineup with guys who can hit in your ballpark with a 1 defensive rating, then sit back and enjoy the show.

I love it all: leagues with strict usage rules or limited player sets, the anarchy of mis-priced cards and eccentric results, the satisfaction of winning with a team that resembles something remotely akin to real baseball, the guilty pleasure of having Dale Murray win 43 games...

Sometimes you do literally make me LOL Petro.

So far so good in that league but I'm pretty sure my hitters will come back down to earth.

All this Murray talk made we check out his career stats and going from memory, he never averaged over 2 innings per appearance in his career (which was actually longer than I thought). And for his Super Season I believe he was right at that number as well, about 2 innings per appearance.
