ATG9: Zero Injuries (mis-carded players)

PostMon Dec 16, 2019 12:00 am

For some reason, SOM is inconsistent about injuries for players who played in every game of the season. These cards should not have any injuries on their cards:

1956 Stan Musial (played all 156 of Cardinals games that year)
1949 Jackie Robinson (played all 156 of Dodgers games that year)
1981 Dwight Evans (played all 108 of Red Sox games that year) - this card is not currently in the game, but would be one of the top rightfielders if added

I know there are more like this. Can we get a crowd-sourcing effort to identify cards that should be updated for the online game and make those changes in ATG9?

Two things about their entire injury "system" that irk me are:

#1 - 600 Plate appearances = max 3 game injury, but 599 plate appearances = 15 game max injury. That's just plain silly, there should be some kind of tiered scale for guys like that.

#2 - Even though I believe it supposed to be plate appearances, it really isn't because it's only calculated as AB's + Walks. So there are plenty of guys who actually had over 600 plate appearances who are still 15 game injury risks.

Okay, I'll toss in a #3 for fun. There absolutely has to be some kind of hidden re-injury roll for guys who are coming back off of injury. It happens far too often that the same guy gets injured after coming back from an injury.

There are dozens of cards that should have 0 injuries that played well over 154 games (when that was the norm). Start with Cobb; his '09 card has injuries despite him playing in 156/157 games that year.

The other piece is that it should be perhaps games played rather than AB + walks. The 680 rule discriminates against middle of the order power hitters in favor of leadoff hitters.

Here is another thing to consider as well. Hit by pitches some players get hit a lot and do those count as plate appearances if so would not they also push the number of bats over 600. Also several players have over 600 plate appearances yet have 2 injury ratings but the 2 is green not black what about that?

It by pitches should count as PA's but strat apparently doesn't count them. Their PA's never match up with what you see on baseball-reference.com.

How hard would it be to code PA's? AB's + walks + HBP + sac flies = PA's.

Aren't there a lot of screw-ups in the 1994 cards because of the strike-shortened season?
Frank Thomas has a green 0 while Jeff Bagwell, Griffey, Lofton and a host of others are black 1s even though they may have played all of their team's games that season?

Some interesting comments and good suggestions about how SOM might adjust player usage based upon games played or true plate appearances (rather than just AB + BB). In any case, I was referring the rules for how SOM creates their cards. Those rules don't always make sense to me, but they are what they are. In any case, one of those rules is, "if the player played in all of his team's games, there are no injury rolls on the hitting card."

So for some of the suggestions above...

'94 Griffey and '94 Lofton each played one game fewer than their team played
'09 Ty Cobb may have played in 156 games, but the Tigers played 158 games that year

A few more examples of guys who played in all of their team's games, but have injuries on their cards

'55 Nellie Fox
'30 Johnny Hodapp
'35 Joe Medwick

Here's another discrepancy, the newly added 1936 Lou Gehrig:
Don't know the real reason why he is not bulletproof; he played in every game the Yankees played. The Yankees only played 153 games in 1936, while tying two games, for a total of 155 games. Gehrig played in all 155. I wonder if, because the Yankees didn't play 154 complete games, if that threw it off somehow.
