When he came to Boston, ultimately his last MLB stop, as I recall he was pretty much slightly above average. The Red Sox were always happy to take anyone slightly above average, but Seaver felt different. He immediately made you think you were in good hands for that game. He was one of the first pitchers I saw that showed me that experience and knowledge really did matter. Clemens was on that team, throwing fire with ease, 20 strikeout game and turning the world upside down, but Seaver was effective with 41 year old stuff. It didn't compute, but it worked.

And he just was infallible with the horrible Boston media. He was above them, and that was obvious from the start. As if they were afraid to ask him why he sucked on a given day like they did so often with most players. He was Tom Seaver.

I was a big Reds fan and thrilled when he was traded to the Reds. The Big Red Machine with a Super Ace was a dream team. However, he came one year too late.
