What a Difference a Year makes--May 2020 SOM Interview

PostWed Mar 10, 2021 9:59 am

Recalled this May 2020 Entrepreneur article on Strat-o-Matic with interview of Mr Adam Richman. On first read last year and I think posted here, was a relatively hopeful piece of commentary during the pandemic surge. Now...meh.

https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/350587

In light of recent events and email traffic, it really does raise eyebrows. Or maybe ire.

A few quotes.
"I think that goes back to what I was originally talking about — looking at the company more as a tech company, as a data provider[...]"

"We have a huge announcement coming next year that we're not ready to talk about yet, and we have a large development team we've been working with on that. "

Is there an example of someone from your team having come to the table with a creative idea over the past two months that has helped you adjust?
"Our research director, John Garcia, is instrumental in setting up the parameters for this [Baseball Daily] simulation and creating a rhythm to it so that the market can come in and enjoy it."

"We're not actively looking for a buyer. We never have been. We get calls every year from people who are interested in buying Strat-O-Matic, and we take every single one of them."

Clearly, the ATG community is not the community of interest.

Gonna interpret a little...

"I think that goes back to what I was originally talking about — looking at the company more as a tech company, as a data provider[...]"

Honestly I'm at a loss for words with this quote.

"We have a huge announcement coming next year that we're not ready to talk about yet, and we have a large development team we've been working with on that. "

Our security measures suck so we'll have a huge security breach next year. Our large development team, 1 person, has been working 15 min/ day on that. (along with his janitorial duties/ online sales/ floor waxing/ landscaping etc...)

"Our research director, John Garcia, is instrumental in setting up the parameters for this [Baseball Daily] simulation and creating a rhythm to it so that the market can come in and enjoy it."

Hahaha... we made up this character, John Garcia, thinking we cared about our clients. Meanwhile this person doesn't exist. It's actually my Golden Retriever. And while he couldn't care less about our clients, he sleeps/eats and craps all day.

Lol. Thanks, Visick. My mental image...

Customer service (telling customer): "I check every other day with the guy handling the new ATG cards but he is so involved with shipping out new product that he doesnt have time right now..."
Customer Service Guy: "Hey , when are the new cards going to be ready?"
Guy in charge of that (same guys put on products development hat): "As you can see I'm really busy right now...let me ask guy in charge of shipments..."
Shipment guy (same guy shipping hat): "I'm
Biss-sy!..."
Customer Service Guy (customer service hat): "The customers are up in arms about security glitch. What are we going to do about it?"
Security guy (same guy puts on security hat": "Tell them we're working on it!"
Customer Service Guy: "Theyre complaining about delay in 2020 season card roll-out! They want to know when it's coming out"
Tech guy (same guy puts on tech hat): "Why would we let our customers know that? I dont get it..."

For some reason it reminds me of when Bob Newhart put on his hat to pay bills...wow, that kinds of dates me. God, he was hilarious. Does anyone under 30 even know who he is?

You guys are funny. Visick's made me laugh out loud

It does show the power of perception and media/image.

To a casual reader, that news story is a positive piece about a scrappy small company that is agile, responsive, and exploiting new business models.

To a customer, well...there is Visick's perception, shared by many here.

Funny because that's the quote that caused me to keep reading. Was like a train wreck and I couldn't resist looking.
