Indeed!

Freeman...your answer could not be right, as it is too long. I prefer 42.
But all I will say, that from my perspective you compare performers in their own time against their own environments. To that end, there are not that many players today that stand out from their peers for long.

Yes, all the athletes are stronger, faster etc. But I think the measure is what makes them better competitors compared to the average player today. Baseballs used to be loosely sewn near spherical balls. Bats were not engineered as they are today. Fences...mounds...grounds...rules...etc. Anyway, cannot compare to say one is better than another IMO.

Whether the game is more or less enjoyable, well that is for the eye of the beholder. I think declining popularity speaks for itself, on average.
