HAL pinch hit Dave Engle for John McGraw in the 9th inning of a 1-run game. I've seen him often pinch hit for Ken Smith with a vastly inferior player against lefties, I guess because walks are so damaging to an offense. Isn't that what Moneyball is about? But I at least can see HAL's faulty algorithm there because there are no base hits on his card, and now I have to take that annoying step of always trying to remember to check the "do not PH against lefties" box in my settings for Smith. But John McGraw????????????????????????????????????????

I'm sure there is an obscure sabremetric index that would explain it :p ...after all, HAL is the product of human programming...

That is inexplicable, but not unexpected.

Can't tell you how many times a week I say 'I saw that coming a mile away" after blowing a 9th inning lead with a walk off home run. Once the first batter gets on I know it's coming.

Yep. I'm laughing with (at?) Matt today, but I'll probably be crying alone tomorrow. :)
