Maybe I am way off base here, but I think the ratio of offense to pitching is certainly a factor in number of wins, but it seems to me that a far more important factor is optimizing your team to your ballpark, to your division and to the teams/parks in your league.
Having a high powered HR offense with lots of BP HRs in a division/league of primarily Forbes/Braves/Cominsky ballparks, may not be the optimal choice.
And an extension of that is matchups. Its not about salary, its about having the right pitchers to face the lineups you are going to face and vice versa.
If you are in a league with an abundance of Navin/Wrigley59/Minute Maid parks, having some cheap heavy righties, like Darwin, Sutton, Pinero etc. might be the way to go.
And likewise if your home ballpark is Navin, and there are a whole bunch of Sportsman38s, Dunns, and Yankee Stadiums in your league, you will be able to use some cheap LH starters when you are on the road.
