Catcher X

PostSat Nov 12, 2022 6:09 am

last night on Catcher X the play result was a Ground Out DP...that would have been interesting to see in real life ...lol....I'm sure someone will say the batter tapped the ball just in front of the plate and Vada Pinson was thrown out at 2nd and Melvin Mora was thrown out at first...lol...not impossible but....

Bases loaded, step on the plate and throw to first?? Quite common.

Then it was that super rare 2-6-3 double play I guess.

I don't fully trust my skills at filtering retrosheet play by play data but it looks to me like it (ground ball double plays initiated by catcher) happened an average of close to 16 times per season over ten seasons (2011-2021, ex 2020). In 2021 it only happened 8 times - 4 times involved throwing to second base then to first. 2 times were bases loaded, step on the plate situations, 1 was a throw to third and then first, and one time appears to be tag a tag the batter and then throw to third play.

I've also downloaded three seasons of play by play from SOM 2021 seasons, that's about 20% more games than a MLB season. I found 27 catch-x ground ball double plays.

The catcher X charts are strange because there's not much difference between a 1 and a 4.
It would seem that the man behind the plate would have an influence on the likelihood of a swinging bunt single.

Yup, it's a big flaw in the basic game in terms of modeling real life, and the main reason why turning on "catcher blocking the plate" max rule is so important (even though MLB no longer allows it), to get more of a value spread between good- and bad-fielding catchers.
