Stan Musial booed??!!

PostFri Jun 02, 2023 9:04 pm

So I accidentally came across the following article:

https://onlycardsfans.com/booing-stan-m ... tan-musial

I was incredulous that Musial was booed. Has there ever been a a better baseball ambassador than Stan Musial? Did any other baseball player even come close to his unique combination of ability, class and grace? Maybe others, like Al Kaline and Willie Stargell, come to mind, but for me, Musial is at the top of the list.

So I was going to post the above referenced article without comment, but got to thinking how sacrilegious it was to boo Musial. The only thing worse would be booing Santa Claus. So I wondered, has Santa ever been booed? I immediately thought, "well if it ever happened, it could only happen in Philadelphia."

So I did a Google search:

"Santa booed"

Sure enough, up popped the following article:

https://www.thedp.com/article/2020/12/p ... gles-santa

I searched online for a video of the incident, but couldn't find it. I did, however, find the following video that confirmed much of what the article said:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7C5Y4vH6h4

So yes, if Santa can get booed, I guess it's no surprise that Musial got booed. Now I wonder if by some fluke the Christians beat the lions at the Colosseum in ancient Rome, did the "fans" there boo as well? ;)

P.S.: In the article about Musial, Joe Garagiola, who was doing color commentary on a game in the 1985 NLCS between the Cardinals and Dodgers in St. Louis, after Musial caught a foul ball, was quoted as saying this about Stan: “Stan Musial just caught that ball. Can you believe that? Look at him, that’s Musial! He’ll get a tremendous hand! Way to go, Stan! And he throws it to the fans, hahaha! Stan the Man made the play. Of all guys to get a baseball. I’m telling ya, the only disappointment that guy had is when he slid into a base, oil didn’t come up.”

Has there ever been a better color commentator on baseball than Garagiola? His love and enthusiasm for the game, combined with his expert analysis, game strategy explanations and knowledge, command. appreciation and respect for baseball history, humor, quick wit, hard work in talking with the players, coaches and managers to get the inside story, and great baseball stories made him second to none as a color commentator. Hearing Garagiola on the "Game of the Week" and post season games are some of my favorite broadcast memories. I sure miss hearing him.

In case you've never read it, you'd likely enjoy the following book authored by Garagiola:

There is a chapter in there about going bald which is absolutely hilarious.
