Elbie Fletcher '43

PostWed May 22, 2024 6:42 pm

I was admiring the stats on Baseball Reference of Pirates' wartime 1B, Elbie Fletcher, who was a bit of a Ferris Fain-type. Fletcher led the NL 3 straight seasons in OBP.

I looked to see what if any representation there was of Fletcher in ATG9. They do have a card for him, but it is not one of his league-leading OBP seasons.

Then I noticed that there is a discrepancy between his stats for the 1943 season on his single ATG9 card (https://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/33 ... 292/469764) and his stats on BBRef.com. His card lists an OBP of .386, but BBRef.com has it as .395 (same as his SLG pct.). All his other stats are identical between the two sources.

Does Strat have it wrong? It's a bit of a shame that Fletcher isn't represented by one of his better seasons, but there seems no reason to cheat him (even if by accident).

Does anyone know of how this could be brought to Strat's attention and fixed? Does anyone know of any other cards where there is a similar discrepancy?

Thank you.

What you say is correct -- Elbie's OBP is .395 in 1943 according to Baseball Reference. You could email SOM at 365support@strat-o-matic.com and point it out. Now, that might be a simple typo on the card info that doesn't affect anything -- the key is whether it's also a discrepancy in the actual card data or rolls. Still to be determined, others could probably figure that out per their Excel sheets perhaps.

Elbie's other best years are 1940 and 1941, a little more power than 1943. But he was a walks-first kind of guy, not a high BA -- tops was 1939 at .303. Perhaps these other cards would be in the high $4M range or so, compared to his $3.42M 1943 card now.

I say all this as a Pirates fan, well aware of Elbie Fletcher. :) Go Buccos, the Paul Skenes Experience is now unleashed upon MLB!

Thank you, Hack Wilson. Go Bucs.

Maybe you like myself also wish the ATG9 set contained the inestimable Buc OF Maurice Van Robays '40 (a ho-hum .273/.316/.402 slash and 11 HR in 572 AB...but with a wait-what 116 RBI!)
