Bullpen pitches less than 40 innings for entire season

Is this supposed to be realistic? :D

You mean to tell me you can win 100+ games and your entire bullpen pitches less than 40 innings? lol

And they try to say this is the most realistic game for the manager/GM experience. lol

But even worse is that no one has a problem with this. And no one has a problem with having no control over the bullpen.

I used to think this was a smarter than average community.

They literally went from being allowed to have a guy in 11 different roles to 2 roles. What RP only pitches in 2 roles for an entire season? And how is that done when you can get away with having like 5 relievers?

The simple fix is, let them set a reliever in up to 4 roles and make a 28 man roster with at least 13 pitchers mandatory. Anything else is just stupid and definitely not a MLB manager/ GM experience.

Why have bullpens at all?

If people like the game this way, that is fine. But don't EVER try to claim this is the GM experience because it is not. What a simple game, like checkers. I prefer chess. Call me crazy I guess.

And yet that team with a +412 run differential and a pythagorean record of 117 - 45 didn't even win a ring.

What a scoundrel that guy is.

Idk why you're so hung up on relievers RB.
Is this supposed to be realistic?

Quite simply, no. No, it is not. It's a *fantasy.* And HAL does nothing but intrude on the fantasy, so minimizing his involvement is A-OK by me.

13 pitcher minimum? Excuse me while I wretch. That's a 21st century thing and this is ATG. The proliferation of single inning relievers is the single worst feature of 21st century baseball, why on earth would we want ATG to mirror that.

The more relievers, the more HAL affects the game. The more HAL affects the game, the worse the experience. Because HAL is terrible. Strat recognized this and took pains to minimize the importance of relievers and the involvement of HAL, and personally I couldn't be more grateful. It makes the game more purely about the cards and the roster construction. HAL is by far the worst part of the game, why anyone would want him more involved is truly beyond me.

I couldn't agree more with you Max. Hal is the worst manager in the history of the game. The less he has to do the better. I'm at the point now where as soon as Hal goes to my bullpen, no matter how good or bad that bullpen is, I stop watching because I know he's going to do something ludicrous to ruin that game. The pitcher prefs don't seem to matter either. Hal just does whatever he wants.

Another perspective is he used 4 Negro Leaguers, who were absolutely expected to go the distance in real life. I looked up each of these pitchers and, using the average of the top 7 innings years for Bell’s “NEL” card, they completed 81.4% of the games they started.

It isn't realistic, that's true.

If I am wading through a card set in which I have limited control over my bullpen, then the 4 starters with no bullpen approach is going to be attractive. I'll feel some guilt, yes, because something about it doesn't feel right. Like I am not being sporting.

Another part of me is like, f4#$% it, find the angles in the card set and leverage those angles to (try to) generate wins. If everyone else is spending 10-12 million on a bullpen, and I am not, well than (at least conceptually) I'll get some extra offensive payroll.

One solution is to say, whatever is allowed is ok. Maybe better, though, is to say that we create leagues where we agree to certain rules. Minimum of X dollars has to be spent on bullpen. Or bullpen has to throw Y innings during the year. We can create the rule structure(s) we want. Could be fun, too.

The 40 inning thing is a corollary of the Dale Murray Effect. Lots of folks got upset when Murray and Sutter were throwing 300 innings a season in DH leagues. Now they are cost prohibitive in a 80M league and we see the opposite effect. People go where the value is, you can't blame them for that.
