Favorite baseball book or movie

PostSat Jul 26, 2014 8:56 pm

bontomn's book recommendation got me to thinking.

1) Favorite non-fiction book: Bullpen Gospels by Dirk Hayhurst
2) Favorite fiction book: Shoeless Joe

Favorite baseball movies: in no particular order.....Long Gone, Bull Durham, Major League and The Bad News Bears (original)

Discuss....Talk amongst yourselves.

I think Bull Durham would have to be my favorite baseball movie. In addition to being entertaining, it was a pretty accurate depiction of life in the low minors.
Eight Men Out is up there too

favorite book, without a doubt , is the Bill James Historical Abstract. The Willie/Mickey comparison and the Ty Cobb part alone are worth the price of admission.
Also really liked Earl Weaver's "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts"

1) Favorite non-fiction: Summer of '49 by David Halberstam
2) Favorite fiction: Veracruz Blues by Mark Winegardner

Favorite movie: Don't think you can top Bull Durham (Incidentally, John Feinstein's "Where Nobody Knows Your Name" is a pretty decent, but depressing, non-fiction account of modern-day life in the minors), but Eight Men Out was very good. I also enjoyed "42."

"42" was great, and even more impressive to me because they just don't make many good movies these days. Call me an old grouch if you will, but "get off my lawn"

Darn, I forgot A League of Their Own. I enjoyed that as much as Bull Durham.

Book: Game Six; the Big Red Machine

Movie: None of them really get it, they do some parts well, but they never capture it's essence. Documentaries come closest.

Movies:

1. Bad News Bears (1976)
2. Eight Men Out
3. "42"
4. The Natural

My favorite books about baseball off hand are: Glenn Guzzo's "Strat-O-Matic Fanatic" and "The Fielding Bible". I haven't read too much baseball fiction except those Matt Christopher books as a kid and a Robert B. Parker book about Jackie Robinson and a fictional body guard who traveled with him. By the way, I thought "Field Of Dreams" was lame years and years ago when I saw it originally. Maybe if I saw it again it would not be so bad.

The Glory of Their Times got me intersted in baseball history when I was a kid. In 4th grade, I was allowed into the high school library, and that was the first one I checked out.

Pride of the Yankees, because of the real players in it.
