Tin Foil Hat Time - Injury Conspiracy Theory

PostFri Jan 18, 2019 8:37 am

I own Jim Sundberg ($3.65 version) on exactly two active teams.

On both of those teams last night he got injured for 10 games in the second game of the series both times in the 7th inning. I'm sorry but this defies all logic and reason.

Call me a quack if you want, but I've seen this too many times that the same guy gets injured on multiple teams on the same night and when I saw they were both 10 games I decided to look deeper.

Two injuries to the same player on the same night in the same game in the same inning for the same duration. Feel free to go ahead and do the math on that one.

I think they roll the "dice" for each player across all leagues per plate appearance. Across all teams. SOM economizes it that way. Terrible. We're led to believe each game is unique, but it's not, because the SOM engine probably doesn't do unique rolls for every plate appearance, but they take short cuts and just blast out the roll outcomes across all leagues and players.

That doesn't make sense. If all rolls were made across leagues, then you would have a dozen guys who all had 4 home runs from Babe Ruth on the same day.

This would be easy to test. Draft two identical teams. See what happens.

The die rolls are in the PBP tab, each game is different, as much as Glen Head runs things poorly, the randomization is there. It's only 3 factors lining up, game/inning, dice roll, and split card for injury.

In this case the dice rolls are not the same

H.Groh 3-6 Ground Out (3B) b-0 F9
1 S.McInnis 3-5 Ground Out (3B) b-0 F9
2 J.Sundberg 2-12 HBP b-1 F9
SUBSTITUTION at PR: Lou Criger
INJURY: J. Sundberg for 10 more games

J.Sundberg 1-12 HBP b-1 F9
SUBSTITUTION at PR: Lou Criger
INJURY: J. Sundberg for 10 more games

I found it hard to believe that all rolls are the same for all players across the evenings games. But it is interesting that the rolls were different, one against and LHP and the other against an RHP.

The base odds of the injury occurring are 1 in 216. But what are the odds of it happening again in the same inning of the same game for the same duration of time.

And again, I've seen it too many times that the same guy gets injured in multiple leagues. From now on I am definitely going to watch to see if the duration is the same in those situations.

Interesting, last night I had an injury to '77 Jim Sundberg on a 1-12 roll against a righty pitcher: https://365.strat-o-matic.com/game/play ... 438493/957

Rich, save yourself the agony and stop drafting the same team over and over again :o ;)
