Mookie Betts. Alex Rodriguez. Hank Aaron. This is a tricky question for me. I've been most disappointed in players whose salaries are inflated because of defense that underwhelm on offense based on what I'd expect for the price. I've also been pleasantly surprised by the bargain basement offense I get out of defensively challenged hitters. But in the long run, I can't tell how much the superior defense aspect of the game simulation more than makes up for mediocre offensive stats. So while guys like Mays or Griffey may not regularly produce eye-popping at the plate, maybe they are worth it because of their hidden defensive contributions.
