^^yes, but the goal is to use each player's best card....go for it whoopycat!! (remember that you can't have any player carded for LF or HAL will use him instead.)

A couple final notes on the Athletics...

Led the league in defense!!

And during playoff run as #7 seed, beat #2, #1, and #5 (who tied with #1 for best record in league).

i've done similar w/ Valentine and Straw and Clemente and Oliva and no LF on the team; I think one of the Valentine-Straw teams was a playoff team, and I also did it once w/ Sosa and Canseco but no winners.

thing is that with blanks in your lineup, HAL may not bat them in the order you want.

the hassle is making sure that you have NO one who can play the position any subs are worse fielders in the of positions that you want to 'fill-in' from than the guys you want to fill in with because HAL will use the best fielder available to fill in with.

I'm reactivating this post, for any help/advice.

Playing in the 2015 format, I got both Trout and McCutchen in the draft. I'm planning to use Trout in cf and hope that Hal will use McCutchen in right field. In left field, I'm planning to use a platoon. No one in my team will have a rf position on his card, but I'm afraid that Hal will pick up one of the platoon guy planned to be in the left field.

So I guess my question is: since Rolandzeut posted his experiment, did anyone try this out-of-position strategy only to see HAL wreak havoc.

This should work the way you want it to.

A couple things to remember - you need to leave most of lineup blank in order to prevent McCutchen from batting 9th and trust HAL to fill in rest of positions appropriately (I know that's asking a lot).
In the Team Strategy page, list him as #1 def. replacement in RF. The only problem I had was, as mentioned earlier, when facing Cone and his high Righty balance, HAL put in a left handed batter (Baines), but if you don't have a lefty option on bench, that should solve that.

Good Luck!!

It is a little bit silly that we can't play CF ers in LF or RF the way both the CD-ROM and the Board Game rules allow for. For one thing it is done in real life and not just at the All-Star Games. Like Mike Trout couldn't play left field? It's not like asking your catcher to play SS.

Just to clarify, when you play the CD-ROM you can put ANY centerfielder in LF without a range deduction.

Congratulations on your experiment and winning the championship. I am just saying you shouldn't have to go through all that. Well done though.....!!!

For some reason, I like Hack Wilson in CF. Defense is overrated in SOM :))
