Here is a link to the infielder fielding charts:

Notice the charts for range and errors and note that they occur simultaneously (meaning both a hit and/or an error is possible).

Also notice the G1 chances for infielders with range of 1.

to expand a little on Whoopycat's reasoning, which I tend to agree with... e's (errors) are often worse than poorer (i.e. 3,4,and 5) ratings.

poor ratings don't get to balls for hits, so at 2b and ss you just pile up singles... (you get doubles and triples at the corners and in the of)

e's can somewhat frequently be 2 base errors (at any position)

(you had said you weren't sure what his original comment meant.)

bottom line, to hat I thought was the point of your question any team is a 'gestalt'; poor fielders don't matter quite as much if you have Ryan, the big unit, and Kerry Wood in your rotation mowin' 'em down (fewer gbC and fbA results) (although fewer gbA results too)

but I have won w/ a dp combo of ss2e27 and 2b3e21 (Vaughan and DeShields) and a 3e30(something - the 2.31 or so Nettles) and often use 4's at first in general, though, I would take a lower 'e' than a lower range rating, the lower range rating will turn into extrabase hits (except in the middle infield), but the 'e' will turn into guys running around and guys throwing the ball around the bases like little leaguers. similar results w/ the PB (passed ball) and WP (wild pitch) ratings, I think there can be a 2 base advances of each and they can be compounded by further errors

Also you should look at this article that ranks defensive performance with respect to range and error rating.

Good luck in all your future leagues.

That defensive article is solid. But I found it hard to dumb it down when I wanted to compare this guy versus that guy. So I created the spreadsheet you'll find in the link below and it's what I use to quickly boil down comparisons. Its far from complete as it doesn't weight extra bases and probably a few other things. But it allows me to see through the noise.
