Thanks.

You might be right about the PC game. I've honestly never played the PC game. I only played the board game.

Still, Diamond Dope does a great job of explaining the math behind chances in CF as opposed the LF and RF
...they do it for Def Rating purposes and not so much Arm Strength but for me that's enough by itself.

Ok, I'll bite. I've never seen any kind of explanation like that on Diamond Dope. I'm looking at it right now, and don't see anything. Is there another version or something that I'm missing? Or am I just hopeless?

I'm looking forward to reading Steve F's report from tech support.

My thanks to pacoboy, also, for his perspectives. Do you have a link, by chance, to that discussion with Macpelletier's comment? That seems very interesting.

I did a quick scan of some leagues and found that big-arm CFs tend to have more assists than big-arm RFs on the same team. This would seem to support the view that the extra chances CFs get might be more important in SOM, so I'm leaning that way unless further info emerges.

I remembered that RFs got a +2 on their arms for throws to 3B on a single but not that LFs got a -2. Josh Hamilton (-4) is also playing LF on this team vs RHP, so he's going to be a -6 on anyone trying to go to a third on a single to LF. Not many are going to try that.

Go to the "HELP" and then go down to the "NERP" explaination (I'm a HUGE NERP believer FYI). There is a URL there that takes you to it. .....or use the link above.

.....it's a very good read if your're into stats.

This is the thread I personally bookmarked....I tend to play HIGH CAP leagues. Maybe this is what you're referring to?
....this was before ATG9

Thanks, pacoboy and freeman, for posting those links. Both are extremely interesting, and I've bookmarked them.

I'm a NERP fan—and a Dean Carrano fan too.

By the way I stumbled upon Marcpelletier discussing an interview of Bruce F. When the best talk about Strat..it's a good idea to listen.

"Here's part of the interview with Bruce F.

(all rights to the http://www.ultimatestratbaseball.com. Of course, I invite you to subscribe to this newsletter).

Wolfman: Now lets talk about how did you become the latest champion? What would you say are the keys to your success? Obviously building the right team via the draft and picking the right stadium have a lot to do with it?

Bruce: The key to success is to build upon value players. I use spreadsheets and give each player a value number. I build my teams on these value numbers. I draft the highest value players in the order of my spread sheet computations.

(...)

Wolfman: So if we could summarize the strategy you use to build a team in a simple and clear way, what would be the keys you follow?

Bruce:
1. Use 9 pitchers and 15 hitters instead of 27 players. This gives you an extra 1.5M to use on the field

2. Choose the best 4 Aces that you can get. Use a cheap bullpen with strong R/L splits.

3. Use the best pitcher's park available so that your Aces can get more innings.

4. Use 6 platoons in DH leagues and 8 platoons in non-dh leagues.

5. Do not platoon at SS.

6. (Find the good values)

Bruce: If Dale Murray and Hoyt Wilhelm were SP's, then they would be the best values. However, when you combine them with any SP rotation in the sim, their value diminishes. Therefore, Four Aces or Five Kings will bring you more wins than a super-reliever."
