So I'm guessing Johnson was fatigued for his relief appearances but fine for his starts.

That would match what I saw. Sometimes he’d seem to come in for one batter and get pulled.

Matt (tmfw30) has used this strategy before, it works for him. Game 161, Klippstein comes in at f9 to relieve

Game 162 he starts also at f9

Really interesting strategy with that staff. One SP* and 4 non-* SP/RP, which is normally frowned upon to mix the two. But he opens the year with the one SP* meaning the other 4 guys are all on staggered schedules so at least one of them will be F9 and available to relieve.

So. I have a guy in one of my Andy leagues doing this with Warren Spahn this season.

https://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/41 ... 902/460905

If you’ll look. His relief appearances he comes in at F0 and as long as he doesn’t give up a walk or hit he keeps pitching. If he gives up a walk or a hit however HAL pulls him

These relief appearances do not seem to affect his starts as he is F9 on them deep into the games.

Here is a more instructive one. Another league I am in has an owner using Len Barker in relief and starting.

https://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/30 ... 292/460643

When he enters the day after a start he comes in at F0
https://365.strat-o-matic.com/game/460643/371

That’s the only game though where he comes in with less than f9 is here
https://365.strat-o-matic.com/game/play ... 460643/680

In this one he comes in at F4. It’s three days rest like most of his other appearances but the difference seems to be that in his previous start he pitched until he was f4 and that was rare. Typically he was taken out of his starts still at f9;

He did come in the very next day (3 days after his last start) at an F9

Thanks to everyone for the examples and tips.

But, apparently HAL knows what I am up to. I have Oral Hildebrand set to Close and Setup. I do not have him in my regular rotation and I wait until the day of the games to stick him in as a per game starter.

He has NEVER entered the game as a RP and last night, with him not having pitched in 3 games, the rest of my pen blew two leads.

I am sad...... :(

You know one other thing that can be a factor--which I recalled when Walter Johnson was mentioned...is the reliever price makes a difference when HAL decides who to use. So, if you do this, you may want to ensure the S/R target has a salary that is at least as high as the relievers, but ideally lower than the other starters.

It can be done, but it is some trial and error because it can be unpredictable with different team compositions and situations.

OBTW...ref Matt's tactic...the SP* ace with 4 non * SPs can be very effective given the right salary (ie to inning load) and balance mixes. The biggest advantage when I've used it is it gives more flexibility and better matchups for the playoffs.

So coming back to this discussion a little here. I have the As in one of Andy’s leagues. It’s a rough season as I pushed won two pennants and the pitching staff retired (not unexpected but the two championships is worth it IMO).

Anyway. This year I have Grove and a bunch of 4M range starters. So what I’m doing is essentially using a six man rotation with Grove pitching every fourth start and set up as the closer. The other starters are playing matchups (not well because they aren’t good to begin with but that’s the theory).

I set the per game SP for each series as I want it and my rotation only has Phil Collins because I don’t want him pitching at all (the drawback is he starts if I don’t get my per game pitchers updated each series).

For the bullpen I have one role defined. Grove as the closer. (I set this up maybe around game 50 to do this).

I have the closer set to maximum and Hal is bringing in Grove with some regularity. I think I moved it to Maximum around game 70 which made a significant difference.

Grove enters the game tired F0 and Hal lets him pitch until he gives up a hit (although he did not pull him on a GB(x) single).

This far he has 13 relief appearances. 8.2 innings. 7 sv. 0 ER. 10H. 1BB 9K.

I don’t know how well it would work on a better team that needs it’s closer more often.

Here’s the team

Here’s Grove.

What is the secret? I promise not to tell anyone else....

Here's a 103 win example from ATG 8. As I recall, Piniero or Duren started game 1 of every series and whoever didn't start pitched in relief.

I miss Joel Piniero.
