This I was not aware of. Had Brock on team for pinch runner but have dropped him and picked up Gandil for defense replacement and bench spot holder to meet 13 batter minimum.

I do think the combination of high prices for relievers AND less control/innings is a bit much. One or the other would have been sufficient.

Question regarding defensive replacements.

Is there a particular inning where HAL starts applying defensive replacements?

Is there a certain number of runs ahead requirement before HAL triggers replacements?

From my limited experience only playing 2 teams at a time, but for a while, is mostly 8th and 9th with a lead of any amount. Sometimes the bottom of the 7th.

If any injuries occur and you've only set D replacements on the team page, HAL ignores it, which is good. If you have "Remove for D sub with lead" on the hitter page, Davey Johnson's shitty glove is headed to the bench like you want, but if Charley O'Leary is hurt, HAL may be left with an option to put Albert Belle in at 2B, where I think the unrated D is 5E65? I won't swear to that rating, but it's awful.

Well, this is what I finished with. Not my typical team. I am in Forbes so drafted with plan for high BA and high double count. A few misses.

Trout was consolation prize for missing on Cobb. Decided to keep him to play LF so I had some firepower for multiple power parks on the road. Got

Gibson fell in my lap as someone had to do something to get under the cap. Only defensive replacement I have set is Pudge for Gibson. Might have been better plan for that but Pudge is scentimental favorite.

Started with Clemente and Ichiro platoon in RF. But Betts was there in waivers and wound up with him from the #6 pick. I gather he is not highly respected. Hopefully I will not be finding out why. LOL. Probably spent too much on relief but I tend to struggle with that. Spent too much time watching the Royals World Series and the Rays.

Thanks for all the advice getting me caught up to speed some and shaving off some of the rust.

This is ATG, not the horrific game MLB became with 6 and 7 man bullpens and 3 and a half hour games. I'd like to have the option of using a bullpen with two good arms, a mediocre middle man and a mop up man. With the new settings, these four all pitch equally in any given situation.

I use this exact bullpen setup all the time, and it is very easy to set up.

Good Arm 1: Middle Man, Setup
Good Arm 2: (no roles assigned)
Mediocre Arm: first Mopup
Crappy mopup: second Mopup

Closer usage: Regular

I pretty much do the same as Whoopycat.

The powers that be listened to the complaints of Dale Murray pitching 300+ innings. They took action and limited the amount of roles one reliever could have. Problem solved.

Well OK, that's an opinion. Another opinion is the dramatic price increase along with draconian changes to bullpen management was a mistake.

I don't want to be forced into Whoopycat's strategy to claim bullpen management success - for all intents and purposes four studs in a pitchers park against weak competition, and from what I can see its his only completed ATG9 team. I've used the four man bullpen successfully through ATG 8 in Minute Maid, Shea, Forbes '57, etc., not just in pitchers parks. I have yet to see any evidence that will work in ATG9. By the way, with over 200 ATG teams, I've never come anywhere near 300 innings for a reliever - I voted to limit their innings - however, in this case the cure is worse than the disease.

I think some of the better and more experienced managers confuse a good "work around" with good bullpen logic...and they don't mind patting themselves on the back, while telling you everyone is entitled to their opinion.
