Hi RB!

I don't know. Though I would offer that having a 3rd catcher at .50 has little utility unless you are DHing one or something. Maybe I am missing something though.
Even then, remember that SOM treats catchers differently--when one is injured, the other can't get injured.

Gaming that means you can try to squeeze a little more value out of a high injury catcher by pairing with another high injury catcher, or by using one catcher as a DH, def replacement, etc so that you almost try to work an injury for the lesser catcher. Then you get a free ride on the higher injury guy.

Problem is HAL does some weird things with defensive subs (as this thread shows) and when catchers are DHing and won't automatically transfer the person to catcher when an injury happens.

Roosky's solution makes the most sense because the catcher mechanics is one of those head scratchers for why it is as it is.
As others have pointed out, I almost never check "Remove for defensive sub" for anyone due to the weirdness. I just add the sub to the team strategy page if applicable.

What he said, NEVER check remove for defensive sub, HAL does crazy shit. Just list the replacement on the team strategy page ONLY. That'll get you the best results.

Bengie Molina has 2 passed balls despite a pb(0) rating. How does this occur?

I think it can occur on the X-chart when the result is P/P or P/F. Even a 1 rated catcher has a few of these on the chart (although I think you also check the pitcher's WP rating to see if a passed ball actually occurred).

King Kelly (3(-2)e13, T20 pb20) for
Javy Lopez (4(+1)e1, T8 pb0).

Kelly is a 3 instead of a 4 and his arm is better. But his high e rating, throwing errors and passed balls makes Lopez better overall defensively.
Apparently HAL keeps seeing the 4 and pulling him out.
Either that or he enjoys watching Kelly (1886) play catcher without a wearing a mask, a cup or a glove.

More weirdness. Last night King Kelly was catching and HAL put in Javy Lopez as a defensive sub.
(I don't have either player set as a defensive sub and neither is checked "remove for defensive sub")

It looks like the preferred catcher is whoever is not in the game at the time.

Here's a fun one: HAL subbing Molina for Russell Martin. 1(-3)e1,T-1(pb-0) for 1(-2)e1,T-14(pb-1)

Barring that, contact support because it would definitely be an issue. replying to this comment, Does support really respond? cause Ive had HAL post say a 1-4 as a HR with a hitter but the card says Fly out RF. ? or a 2b when the batters card has a K listed? also other crazy stuff like the same number 5-6 on a pitchers card 3 batters in a row single and then the pitcher is removed in the 5th inning with a 3 run lead and those were his 1st hits he gave up, few walks sprinkled innings before that or a pitcher pitching into the 9th gives up a couple hits and isn't pulled leaving him in for the complete game maybe but "L" happens cause closer is on the bench, I just dont get the random from HAL, all over the map,

Well, after the Molina for Yogi experience, when I'm backing up with a .50M C, I'm going to be using a slightly weaker defensive player than my starter. For example, on a new 140M team, I've got Dickey's 1937 card [c-1(-1)e4,T-5(pb-2)] as my starter. Rathr than risk having Molina sub for him, I'm going with Jerry Zimmerman as my backup: [c-2(-1)e1,T-3(pb-3)].

With luck, HAL will look at Z's c-2, and decide to leave Dickey alone.

BTW, on the Molina front, Bengie has played in 34 games out of a season of 117 games so far. He has 44 AB, and is batting .114 (OPS .247). Nine games Bengie played in were quite legit, filling in for a Yogi injury. The other 26 games were as defensive sub.

In those 26 defensive sub games, Bengie has had 13 AB and 1 hit. One game where Bengie's insertion might have made a real difference was a game I lost 10-9 in 14 innings. Bengie was inserted in the 9th, when I had a lead, and the other guys tied it in the bottom of the 9th. My team went scoreless for 5 more innings until the other guys finally got a run, and Bengie went 0-3. A hit from Yogi might have made a difference. And one 3-6 roll would have been a single on Yogi's card. I lost another extra inning game in 10 innings when the other team tied it, and Bengie went to bat twice.

Anyway, not a huge deal, but it's nice to feel like I have more control. And I'm going to be careful not to use banjo-hitting subs who are better defensively than my starters from now on, unless I really want a defensive replacement for an awful fielder.

HAL is in love with Bengie,
Down 5-2 bottom of 9th, 0 out runners on 1st and 2nd, HAL inserts Molina (now 4 for 48 on the year) to PH for my regular catcher Bassler. Only possible reason is that Bengie although 'w" has HR chances on his card. Even that is very weak with Teddy and Speaker on deck. Luckily we rallied for a win anyway.

BOTTOM OF INNING 9
0 R.Cullenbine 1-9 Double (CF) b-2 F9
0 2 W.Boggs 2-7 Walk b-1 F7
SUBSTITUTION at PH: Bengie Molina (R)
0 12 B.Molina 4-9 Pop Out (2B) b-0 F7
1 12 T.Williams 6-5 Strike Out b-0 F7
2 12 T.Speaker 3-6 Single (CF) 2-H 1-3 b-1 F0
SUBSTITUTION at P: Neal Cotts (L) (role: RH Specialist)
2 1 3 L.Appling 6-7 Single (CF) 3-H 1-2 b-1 F9
SUBSTITUTION at P: Brian Boehringer (R) (role: LH Specialist)
2 12 J.Cunningham 1-5 Double (CF) 2-H 1-H b-2 F9
