Here's what I've done to become better at the game, at 200 mil anyway.
I just jumped in one day and put a team together, did well made the playoffs but lost in rd 1.
So I went back and paid close attention to who I was competing against, back when we had manager ratings that is, and picked out two or three guys to analyze to some degree. nev stuck out the most to me not b/c of this rating so much but b/c at the time I noticed he had a lot of teams built toward one side of the plate. So I figured it must work to some degree so I decided that would be my goal, to get good at building teams for the X side of the plate.
Now as morpheus has mentioned you can put yourself in a corner if you do the same thing every time, but my intention has been to learn the cards through this method and try to observe any improvements I'm making. Also I've gone both routes of building that style team with few platoons and with at least half the line up platooned. I'll worry about being burnt by doing the same thing over and over when that time comes I guess.
It seems to have worked for me as I've really come to know a good portion of hitters cards this way and know what kind of floors I can expect from certain cards, and have also learned that a good player heavily balanced to one side can really hurt you if he gets faced with that opposing side too much, so it has also made me much more aware of my day to day line up and rotations. Originally I was very much a set it and forget it manager, not anymore, IMO it can really kill you, and it is less fun.
