Griffith in the early 50s. Hard to tell, but the CenterField wall juts in toward the playing field. A large tree and several apartment buildings were behind the wall, due to the unwillingness of the owners of the tree and those nearby houses to sell to the Senators' owners during construction of the stadium.

Aerial Photos of Griffith. Notice the odd shape of left-field stands. The Left Field Line distance was deeper than the Left Field Power Alley. The LF line distance was 407 feet when Griffith opened.

Great pictures, Andy. They bring back a lot of childhood memories: a 10-cent ride (and transfer) on the street car (whose tracks were ripped out in the '60s), a 50-cent bleachers ticket, watching Jolting Joe and Teddy Ballgame (saw him hit one over that jutting centerfield fence by the flagpole off Camilo Pascual). Missed only a shot of the "Beer Garden" erected in the front four rows of the leftfield bleachers with wooden planks put up about chest high in each row so that beer could be served in contravention of Washington's blues laws, which, among other things, banned selling alcohol to anyone who could drink it while standing up. I believe a good portion of the left field bleachers are now a parking lot for Howard U.'s medical school. Each year, it became harder to come up with an excuse to get me out of school for the presidential opener!
