Am I going blind or is there something weird about that 1909 photo? Look at the batter. And the batter in relationship to the rest of the action. Huh???

Looks like he's caught in his follow-through after a pop-up.

He does look like he has just popped up. But the pitcher appears to be in mid delivery. And non of the others -- the runner on first, the catcher, the infielders, or the umpire are looking up. The all appear to be anticipating the pitch to be thrown.

Isn't that the rubber a stride or two behind the pitcher, though? It is a pretty odd looking shot, whatever it is.

Yeah, I think you're right. That is the rubber. So he must have already thrown the ball. But what pitcher ends up in that kind of position after he's completed the pitch. And the batter's body looks kind of weird -- like his butt is on the wrong side!
