Relief pitching

PostSun Nov 04, 2012 1:29 am

My question has to do with relief pitching. In particular RP's that throw more than 208 innings per season.

I believe that the RP innings pitched record was set by Mike Marshall in 1974 with 208 innings.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Why is it OK for relief pitchers such as Murray, Sutter, Wilhelm and Radatz to pitch 300 + innings?
I have done the same thing, but I just think it should not be allowed.
Why should a manager be allowed to draft 4 or 5 low HR starting pitchers and then buy a medium/high
priced RP to throw half his game for him.
Am I the first player to bring this up? I had never heard of Dale Murray until I saw his awesome Strat card.

I just feel that most relievers in this on line version of Strat should be 3 innings MAX. If not 2 innings.
To me it would just be more realistic if this took place.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about.

On this team Bruce Sutter is both Cy Young and MVP of the league.

Did Bruce ever throw this many innings in a season?

You are, um...definitely NOT the first to bring this up. Opinions are varied.

I personally have no problem with the super reliever.

I have heard of people starting leagues where they cap the available innings for a pitcher.

at least the cards are accurate.
Alternatively, is it not equally silly to have FantaSim card Arky Vaughn (pick any FantaSim player card) with an OPS of 1.1-1.2?
Or guys that had 30 at bats in a full season who play 150 games, while guys who played 120 games in the strike-shortened season have 15-game injury risks even if they didn't miss a single game during the season?

Or that there can be 30+ errors from a catcher...or that a guy who struck out 30 times a season will always strike out more than that...on and on...

To identify the relief pitching thing is just one of many, but at least it is more in line with a classic approach to starter/relief than a card that was not created based on SOM's regression/testing, but on essentially a random draw.

I'd say get yourself a Sutter or Murray and join in. I have a Radatz on one of my teams and probably not going to pitch 200 innings in Forbes '09, but he"ll earn his pay. Shoveling manure, chopping wood, and rounding up horses when not in the bullpen certainly does build upper body strength and endurance for those long relief 4-5 inning stints.

when I see this, I see a manager that doesn't want to work to fill out a starting rotation... and it sucks.
And yes, cards like Arky &%$#@ Vaughan sucks too.

He does state in his initial post he has done the super reliever himself. We probably all have because it is a winning strategy. But I agree with sneaky snake that there should be limits.

To me it is either a flaw in the ratings (R? rating too high)
or it is a flaw in the rules that allow a guy to throw multiple innings in 2 of every 3 games
or it is a flaw in the game code that does not properly fatigue overused pitchers
or card is underpriced since it is priced like a reliever but delivers value of a 300 inning starter (if value is same price should be same).

Strato should address this. But until they do only someone playing with a short deck would not employ some form of this strategy.

I will agree that Sutter should not pitch 150+ innings, 1964 Dick Radatz threw 157, 1927 Wilcy Moore 213, 1974 Mike Marshall 203, and 1965 Hoyt Wilhelm 144. Most of the inning-eaters are below 2M and not particulary closers or rally-stoppers. Relievers such as Sutter should be R2 and not an R3. (The Cubs had to use Sutter cas they didn't have anybody else). 1974 Dale Murray only threw 69 innings, but is an R4. Radatz threw 157, but is only an R3. 1909 George Suggs only tossed 44, and he is an R5! Does that mean Suggs only came into maybe 12 games all year? The list goes on... Maybe in ATG VII this wil be adressed. Oh, are we having an ATG VII? I'm still waiting on the 20 new players every month.

Not going to happen. To change this strato would have to admit to making a mistake with those ratings. They might possibly have to update the existing cards. Though since each new cdrom has every team on it which is unlocked with a code I do not see why future cdrom images could not have updated images. Cost would be negligible and a single spreadsheet file on the cd could list the changed players with a column for old ratings and a column for corrected ratings.

Oh, are we having an ATG VII?

My guess would be no. I suspect they will just keep adding fixes/features to ATG6. Saving up new features for a version 7 would only delay our getting them. Extra work for them and less desirable for us. A lose-lose in my opinion.

I'm still waiting on the 20 new players every month.

Don't understand why adding 20 cards would be such a huge undertaking. Might be time to issue some. Though I think the next batch of cards should be a batch replacing the bogus fantasim cards with real cards.
