That's surprising. Because he did indeed play ss in the '68 series......and the Cardinals still couldn't beat them.

Maybe Dal Maxvill should have played cf in the last game; maybe he would have caught that ball.

Just read a book about the 1968 Series. Mayo Smith wanted to get Kaline in the lineup.

In reviewing the statistics for the season, Stanley did play 9 games at SS during the regular season (at the end of the season, if my memory serves me right). He started eight games at SS and played there 6 complete games.

1968 was the year of the pitcher. Stanley's 88 runs scored was 5th highest total in the American League. But, alas, he grounded into 22 DPs that year, which was tops in the AL.

Watched a replay of Game 1 of the 1968 Series, and saw Stanley at SS. As if to settle him in, Lou Brock grounded out to Stanley for the Cards' first out of the game. I'm sure he thought, "If I can field a grounder and throw out Brock, I can get anybody."

Stanley started all 7 games at SS for the Tigers for the following 7-game line: 14 Put Outs, 16 Assists, and 2 Errors.

and the Tigers noticed that teams didn't try to throw Brock out at home so he got in the habit of not sliding. Willie Horton threw Brock out because Freehan blocked the plate and he didn't slide.

During the following season (1969), Stanley played 59 games at SS, starting in 58 of the games, and playing at that position for the entire game in 37 of them.

He played 74 games in CF, including 72 for the entire game. And he ended up winning a Gold Glove that season, along with Paul Blair and Carl Yastrzemski. Pretty impressive accomplishment for not even played half the season's games in the outfield.

Detroit was 90-72 that season. I had forgotten just how well they did that year. I'll take a 90 win season in Strato anytime.

The 68 series, the first of the Cardinals record 4 best-of-7 series losses when being up 3-1. :( If memory serves they were up in Game 5 before losing in the late innings. Great team Detroit had that year.

This was always a hard decision. Do you put his gold glove in CF or stick Stanley at SS to get Kaline and Northrup's bats in the lineup

Just looked up the 1968 Stanley card and noticed no SS rating. Strange, because I swear he was a 4e48(or thereabouts) when the '68 Tigers were added in ATG2. Pretty sure I used Mickey at SS all season with that Tiger team in a theme league. Anybody know how to access the pre-ATG3 teams??
