RIP Stan the Man

Two lost on the same day is pretty rough. I was never a big Weaver fan, but how could you not like Stan the Man? I remember following the Cards in the 50s, when Houston was still a farm team for them. Then in the early 60s got to see Musial in Colt Stadium - what a thrill for a school kid. Big loss to baseball.

Stan pinch-hit in the first MLB game I ever attended. He was a part-time player by then, but still greatly feared. And he was apparently a great human being.

Preacher Roe when asked how he pitched to Stan, "would throw him four wide pitches and then try to pick him off first"
RIP to one of the classiest players to ever play the game, STAN THE MAN!

Truly a sad day. He was our family favorite. My grandpa got to meet him and Red Shoendienst in Philly while his ship was in dry-docks (probably 50 or 51). Stan and Red waved him and his buddy over (they were in their whites in the bleachers) and they talked with them for quite a while.

RIP to a true legend.

"I've had pretty good success with Stan by throwing him my best pitch ... and then backing up third."-- Carl Erskine
