Correct me if I am wrong

PostFri Jan 25, 2013 5:32 pm

Down by 2, bases loaded with 2 outs in the 9th

BOTTOM OF INNING 9
0 J.Morgan 2-7 Strike Out b-0 F7
1 C.Keller 2-2 Walk b-1 F3
1 1 O.Charleston 5-9 Pop Out (1B) b-0 F2
2 1 L.Gehrig 1-9 Double (LF) 1-3 b-2 F0
2 23 T.Stearnes 1-7 Walk b-1 F0
SUBSTITUTION at P: Dave Roberts (role: LH Specialist)
SUBSTITUTION at PH: Willard Hershberger
2 123 W.Hershberger 6-6 Single (LF) 3-H 2-3 1-2 b-1 F9
SUBSTITUTION at P: Dan Osinski (role: RH Specialist)
2 123 R.Allen 3-6 Ground Out (2B) b-0 F9

Why stop Gehrig at 3rd. He is a 1-13. Plus 2 because of 2 outs. Plus 1 for Henderson's arm in LF.
Other than Hal, who wouldn't send him?
This is one of the things that bothers me the most, because other times when down by 3 in the 9th, Hal will try to score runners from 1st on doubles and give away outs.

And here is the example 2 days later.
I was up by 6 going into the 9th.
Lindstrom leads off the inning with a single and is thrown out going for 2.
That's just plain dumb. Hal is dumb.

BOTTOM OF INNING 9
0 F.Lindstrom 2-5 Single (CF) b-0 F9
1 G.Templeton 4-8 Triple (CF) b-3 F9
1 3 B.Schmidt 4-9 Sac Fly (CF) 3-H b-0 F9
2 J.McGraw 4-7 Double (CF) b-2 F3
SUBSTITUTION at P: Lee Smith
2 2 B.Terry 6-4 1 Base Error - 3B 2-3 b-1 gb(3B)x F9
2 1 3 L.Walker 1-7 Fly Out (RF) b-0 bpHR 1 F9

Check out this half inning. One run wins it.

BOTTOM OF INNING 10
0 R.Henderson 5-11 Single (1B) b-1 gb(1B)x F7
Caught Stealing 1-o F6
1 H.Duffy 3-7 Single (CF) b-1 F0
SUBSTITUTION at P: John Franco
1 1 J.Dimaggio 1-7 Double (LF) 1-o b-2 F9
2 2 C.Jones 4-6 Single (CF) 2-3 b-1 F9
2 1 3 M.Ott 6-3 Ground Out (1B) b-0 gb(1B)x F9

So to summarize:
Rickey gets caught stealing
Duffy (1-17) gets thrown out at home
Dimmagio (1-16) gets held at third.

4-6 on John Franco's card is

6- SI* 1-13
lineout 14-20

The CF (-1) arm was slightly better than the LF arm (+1)

To address your original questions, (and I may not know if these are the rules
we are playing under), but the single is a si (no *). Hence no chance for
advancement. Same as in my case with Dimaggio.

You get a chance to advance with a single* roll. And with a si** roll the
advancement is automatic.

I would appreciate it if someone weighs in and confirms or corects me on this.

If I understand what you are saying then disagree.
The SI* means you can only advance one base and do not have the option to advance.
The SI with no * means offensive managers choice to try for extra base or not.

With that said I would suspect that whenever there is an option to try for extra base HAL does an extra hidden dice roll or split card pull. Then depending on whether you have running set to aggressive or whatever he has some internal percentage that he will go for it. so aggressive might mean try it 90% of the time. So 1-18 on the split card and the runner is going. 19-20 he is staying put. Percent chances of success should also be factored in to the decision but I am betting the decision to take extra base is more than just chances of success.

No hard evidence on that, just an opinion/belief. My belief is HAL is attempting to duplicate the third base coaching decision and the judgement call that gets made. How many times watching a game do we say he should have sent that runner or he should have held him up? I think that is something HAL attempts to replicate internally. Thus there will be times when odds of being safe are favorable but HAL just holds the runner. And there are times odds are unfavorable that HAL sends him anyway.

I could be totally wrong. But my theory fits what is seen in the examples given above.

What I actually find most disturbing about this question is that it is completely unclear which of the boxes here are in operation for the online game and which are not:

http://somonline.wikia.com/wiki/Maximum_Rules

If you notice the box- it is unclear which ones we are playing under- it only states that Max Rules are in operation-
is it all of them?

BTW- where is this posted for everyone to see- because this is the first time Ive seen this particular page- and amongst the many things that cause me to be irate about what is going on here, we can now add to that list.

Valen's response was helpful.

But we still don't have an answer to the question. I do understand why the wiki
page isn't posted anywhere prominently -- its only partially complete and more
of a hedge than a help. Constructing a rules page on a wiki seems to be ....
well, you can fill in the blank. *Sigh*.

Salt:

Look at the very bottom of the page. It lists them with links to more information.

Yes I see- that is claiming which rules they claim are in use- which I hardly trust given the history of things;
especially given the fact that the image comes from the CD-Rom game- should I believe those are the settings being used in the online game?

BUT where is the link to that page on the 'RULES' page??

Isn't that where EVERYONE should be able to see it.

SEE at least one of the people in charge here just doesn't seem to give a rats ass about doing whats right.
They wait until someone repeatedly points out to them that what they are doing isn't the way to handle things, and when enough people get upset about it they make a change- or often they don't.

Why isn't that on the FAQ page along with Live Draft and whole bunch of other things that need to be talked about?
