Arky Vaughn

PostThu Jun 06, 2013 4:34 pm

Using Diamond Dope, I find that the 1935 Arky Vaughn card has two interesting issues:

FIrst, it is listed as costing 12.34m, although I think it costs 10.20m in ATG Strat.

Second, the stats coming off of the 12.34 AV listing on DD are just absurdly good.

Is there a back-story to this? Was there a price change at one point? And are the stats possibly wrong on DD?

The 12.34 card came from the fantasim set and was not the actual Arky SOM card for that year. It was used in ATG VI. It was replaced with the current accurate card.

I cannot explain how come fantasim had an inaccurate card. There were similar issues with an Eddie Mathews card and a Nap Lajoie card.

The inaccurate card for Vaughn produced the numbers you see.......it had too many HR's on it........not sure if anything else was "juiced" on it. Mathews card had similar issues.

Just a little more background on Fantasim cards for those unfamiliar with that late, lamented game... each player had five seasons of cards and when you drafted a player, which year you actually received was a mystery. Vaughan was a $25 player (Ruth was $50 as a comparison) so if you got Arky's best card - the one that ended up in ATG for awhile, you were a happy camper; if not you traded him because each trade would result in a change of card for the other team. That's why trading in Fantasim was constant as you would look to swap your bad year for Arky for someone's bad year of Brett and so on.
