I Hate Hal's computer decision making

PostFri Jun 07, 2013 12:23 am

Doc Gooden is having a terrible 3-13 season and tends to tire late in games; I have the setting checked to pull him after 6 innings, no matter how well he is pitching, but Hal never does this. I have no reliever settings checked to interfere with this! I really hate computer strat! Face to face is a far superior experience in my opinion!

Do you have any F settings on Gooden? If so, that will take priority over everything. Make sure the "Don't Rel B4" box is blank.

I had that set to 5, but I thought that since I always wanted him pulled after 6, that wouldn't matter. Thank you!

The don't relieve before F5 setting will over rule the max 6 setting. Should just leave the F setting blank unless you have a guy like Maddux or other top pitchers.

6 inning setting aside when you state he tends to tire late in games that alone should be reason enough to either not use the F rating or increase it to a higher number than F5. That is basically saying I have so much faith in him would rather see him pitch tired than have a fresh reliever come in.

On a similar vein, why does HAL keep pinch hitting for Maddux and Alexander (the most expensive card of each) with a lead and still pitching as an F9? I have them both set as "don't relieve B4" F5, and slow hook. Also, it is set on "Closer usage" Regular and "Relief usage" as conservative. Kingman isn't even set as my preferred PH against RHP. This is the third time in the last 6 games and I can't figure out what HAL is thinking.

Here's the latest, leading 5-2 in the 8th inning with one out and no one on base:
0 D.Davis 3-10 Walk b-1 F9
0 1 T.Lazzeri 5-8 Ground Out (2B) 1-2 b-0 gb(2B)x F9
1 2 B.Wynegar 5-7 Ground Out (2B) 2-3 b-0 F9
2 3 H.Ramirez 5-9 Fly Out (RF) b-0 F9
TOP OF INNING 8
0 R.Smalley 1-8 Ground Out (2B) b-0 F9
SUBSTITUTION at PH: Dave Kingman
1 D.Kingman 5-6 Fly Out (CF) b-0 F9
2 L.Sakata 1-5 Single (LF) b-1 F9
2 1 J.Johnston 5-8 Ground Out (2B) b-0 gb(2B)x F9

This is why many people avoid non DH leagues. The less decisions Hal makes, the better.

I use bare minimum settings for starters and usually get pretty good results from HAL.

I never use "Don't Rel B4" or F settings. I do use "Quick" and "Slow" Hook, plus the IBB setting (which I usually set on "IBB less")—but that's about it for SPs. And I don't have any big complaints about how HAL handles my starters.

My experience with HAL is "Keep it simple." The fewer complex commands HAL has to deal with, the better he tends to perform.

Saying you hate Hal Richman will get you kicked off the Message Boards.

This is just a warning.
