The real Luis Tiant

PostSun Jun 09, 2013 8:58 pm

So I was at Fenway Park last night and a guy was walking around shaking hands and being introduced as Luis Tiant. Of course he is about 70 and has the El Tiante moustache and looks like the right guy. But after shaking his hand, I was shook by his height. He was shorter than I am and I would estimate about 5'7" tall. Afterward, I looked him up on Baseball Reference and it lists the real Luis at 6'.
It occurred to me that everyone assumed it was the right guy because we were at Fenway, but probably no one in the crowd actually knew him personally and he doesn't speak English too well. After a few people made the connection, maybe crowd psychology could have taken over.
So was this guy a fake? I thought maybe someone in the Community would know something to suggest one way or the other.
Also, Bill Lee was introduced to the crowd on the big board but there was no mention of Luis (or maybe I missed it?).
