Does anyone ever throw in $20 and give the winner $160 and the second place finisher $80? Is that legal on these boards?

In general, I throw in $16 ($80 for a 5 pack divided by 5 teams) and Strat wins.

We play table top strat with 9 people. Each person throws in $40. The top 4 teams win money. Each trade costs $1, which adds to the pool. Seems like a good idea for online play.

Look for the STAR Tournaments. These are dice and card tournaments with cash prizes.

If you did this, it would have to be a private league.

Not only would it need to be a private league but with people you trust. The only enforcement for payoff would be the honor system.
Plus there are a few on here who are good enough with high stakes on the line you probably might as well just decide how much you want to lose and just write them a check.

I can't imagine someone running off with $240, If everyone kicked in $20 to start.

Yeah, but you need to be careful. We had a 24 team work league where we were 1 team short so we opened the invite to the rest of the strat world. They knew about the buy-in going in and just ignored all messages about the fee once the season started (even though they agreed going in). We caught a break because all playoff teams won their money back and they won their division but lost in the first round.

I understand. I was thinking of playing for $0 that I kicked in for the first league. That would give me credibility to hold the $240 for the second league.
