I've enjoyed the Random Parks leagues here, but I've seen guys get screwed time after time with terrible parks. And then there was the league with 5 or 6 lefty parks.
I propose to run a league with the following structure:
Ballparks are divided into 7 groups (NOT the same as the BS groupings, although the numbering scheme is the same). Each group has either 24 or 25 parks. (BS would not want to do it this way, there are some peculiar parks in some of my groups.) There are 170 ballparks, and if we divide that by 12, that gets us 14 and change. So everyone will be limited to using exactly two parks from each one of my groups. You're guaranteed to get some variety in the parks you get. My groupings will be posted in the next message on this thread.
Caps - we will use each of the following caps once each with and without a DH. 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140.
Randomization of parks.
For the first season, each of the 12 managers will be given a random number from 10 to 79. The first digit will be the ballpark group he (apologies to any ladies out there, my impression is that this is pretty much a guy thing) is assigned to. The lowest of the numbers in the group gets to choose any ballpark from the group, then the next, etc. BUT, if we have more than 3 managers in any group, then only the first 3 get to pick, others may pick from (a) any ballpark group not assigned any managers, and then (b) any ballpark group with only one manager. If more than one group goes over 3 managers, picks are in order of lowest randomizer number. For the second season, we will use the same ballpark groupings as the first, but the selection order will be reversed within each group.
For subsequent seasons (except for the last), the maximum number of managers for any ballpark group which has had two or more managers per season assigned to it is 1. The maximum number of managers for any ballpark group with less than two managers per season will be one plus the number of managers required to bring it up to 2 per season. And the ballpark groups the excess managers must / may select from are based on total number of managers who have used that group previously. For the second pair of seasons, each manager will be assigned a random park group from 1-6, these random numbers will represent their unused ballpark groups from lowest to highest. Third pair will be 1-5, etc. This will prevent managers from being assigned duplicate ballpark groups.
For seasons after the first two, all draft and ballpark selection orders will be in ascending order of total wins, ties broken by total playoff appearances, total playoff wins, and total rings accumulated in completed seasons. If there are still ties, they will be broken by randomizer runs. Also, for seasons after the first two, each player will just have a (tentative) ballpark group assigned to him by randomizer runs. If managers drop out, their replacements inherit their previous records and ballpark histories.
Salary caps
For the first season, we will use a 1-7 randomizer, 1=80, 2=90, etc. through 7 = 140. For all subsequent seasons we will use caps in the order 80, 120, 90, 130, 100, 140, 110, and back to 80; starting of course with the initial randomized cap.
DH / no DH
All odd numbered seasons will use the DH, all even numbered seasons will not use the DH.
Player drafts
We will do 10 rounds per season on Dope. I'd rather not use keepers, but it may save time to allow, say, 5 keepers per team in the even-numbered seasons. Definitely no keepers going in to the odd numbered seasons where we keep ballparks. The initial season draft order will be randomized, the second season draft order will be inverted from the first. Both these will be serpentine. All subsequent player drafts will be straight drafts in the order noted above under the ballpark groupings, and will be recalculated after each completed season.
Dope drafts will have no time limit for the first round and 2 hours for the remainder. Proxies are encouraged but not required.
Signups
When you sign up, simultaneously vote "NO KEEEPERS" or "KEEP and a number from 1-8" If at least 6 guys vote for any number of keepers, then we will use them, and keep the average of the preferred number of keepers (rounded to the nearest whole number, halves rounded up).
Schedule
We will start odd-numbered seasons as soon as the playoffs from the previous odd-numbered season are completed. The same with even-numbered seasons, except that we will start the second season after four weeks of the first season are completed. We won't be rigid about this, any start week including a major holiday (New Year's, Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) will have the Dope Draft started with no time limit until the subsequent non-holiday week (Christmas / New Year's will be delayed two weeks). Also, if anyone is traveling we will delay the Dope Draft for them (but not the ballparks).
