No DP theme

PostFri Nov 15, 2013 3:05 pm

Suppose I wanted to build a team at 100 or 140 mil where I went all out to avoid double plays.
Who would be some of the best choices at various positions?

Bonds may not hit into many, but the guy hitting behind him probably will, due to all the walks. To the extent that you have high-walk hitters (or guys with lots of singles), you should make sure to have guys with very few DP chances hitting behind them.

Here's a recent team of mine that tried to reduce DP's, but it wasn't an all-out attempt.

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/misc/1112955

On the year, they hit into 126 DPs, while my pitching staff induced 174. Against lefties, I went Charleston/ Ruth/ Bonds/ Brosius in the 3-6 spots, and against righties, Charleston/ Bonds/ Ruth/ O'Doul (9L) in the 2-5 spots. Even though Charleston and Brosius have virtually no DP's on their cards, they each hit into 13 on the season. Bonds, Ruth and O'Doul combined for 10 DP's.

Here is a quick stab at a minimal GBA team

If you can get them, you can start a team by going high end with Bonds,Ruth, AND Foxx -

Bonds 14.54 LF (no GBA)
Ruth 15.1 RF (no GBA)
Doby 6.80 CF (zero GBA vs RHP and 2 GBA chances vs LH)..(13.97 Mantle also has zero GBA vs RHP, but more vs LHP)
Darren Daulton 6.35 at C (no GBA)
Foxx 13.16 at 1b (no GBA)
Biggio 9.34 at 2b (No GBA)

Then perhaps
Brosius 5.59 at 3b (2 GBA vs RH and 2 GBA vs LH)
Hanley Ramirez 5.63 at short (2 GBA vs RH and 1 GBA vs LH)

That gets you a lineup in the field with a total of 4 GBA vs RHP and 5 GBA vs LHP
cost = $76.51to start

Then find a DH or backups and a pitching staff with the rest of your cash.

You can knock off about $14M from the team Hackra proposed by going with Callison (3 GBA) in RF and McAuliffe (0 GBA) at 2B.

Some good suggestions. Thanks to those contributing so far.
Have Suzuki penciled in for RF already. Will consider Mcaulife at second.

Bonds, Ruth, and Foxx would be a nice start but if I pick 100 mil cap for this in addition to challenge of getting them might leave me short on funds for rest of team.

Will have to take a longer look at Daulton and Doby, especially if I go with balanced park. One of the big three might make a nice anchor and still leave me money for rest of team if I go with balanced park. But thinking about Forbes since that would allow me to maybe leverage high gb(A) pitchers. Kendall might be better fit if I go with Forbes.

Usually like to have a catcher with a big arm in Forbes type parks to shut down any running games that might want to take advantage of the extra singles given up.

Used Brosius many times at 200 mil as a platoon. Never used him as everyday starter. But if I go with Doby in CF could bat one high in lineup and the other lower depending on opposing starter providing balance.

Thinking of using Coleman as DH in 9 slot. I like have a basestealer in that slot. And I have never used him as a starter and being one of my favorites ever want an excuse to use him on some team. Ditto Brock though with 15 against righties this is probably wrong team. Though a baserunner who steals second is never going to be the front end of a double play. :D

Figure a 1 shortstop is a requirement for this theme. Any suggestions there.

I note that Saberhagen 6.59 Saberhagen has 12 double plays on his card. Any * starting pitchers costing less have more than 6 on their cards? He is the cheapest I have noticed. If I go with 100 mil cap will probably need to find one. If I do not find one then may need to go ahead with 140 mil.

While we're on the topic of DPs, what is a reasonably good season total for a line up? I had 147 on my most recent team, is that good, bad or pretty common?

I think if you filled your team with guys like Ernie Andres and Ken Rudolph,
You won't hit into any DP's because you won't have very many base runners. :D
