What's The Best Strategy???

If you are playing in a $60M league with no restrictions, in other words, the full set of players are available to pick from?? Have played in a couple $60 leagues, but players were restricted to salaries of $4 or less. Wondering what the best strategy is to put a team together with NO RESTRICTIONS!!

I don't play at lower caps very often, but IMO with such a large pool of players to choose from you need to really have a focus and truly utilize the players you select, b/c you don't get the advantage of having the talent of the stud players b/c frankly at 60mil I doubt many guys go after the Ruths, Hornsby's, Bonds and Charleston types (they're just to expensive). I think at 60mil you need to utilize on your rosters spots to their fullest potential.

If you get a Ruth you have roughly 45 mil left to fill 24 spots, that limits you IMO. But again I have not played nearly enough at 60mil to say I have a system that has worked well for me.

You have to have players who consistently perform above their salaries in the park you choose. $60 million is probably the toughest cap, because your player pool is pretty much everybody. You have to really dig. The guys like Eric Hall that play that cap all the time should give you some ideas about who to use.

I have found the best strategy for me in a 60 M game with unlimited player pool is to go for a small ball team and spilt 12M on pitching and 48 M on hitting. I usually spend 7 million on starters and try to get at least one or two of Bordi, Sutton @ 1.25 and Dave Bowell.

For the hitters I like 5 position players to be in the 5.5 - 7.75 million dollar range with Frankie Frisch about as much as I would want to pay for one position and 3 position players in the 2.5 to 3.5 million range with a very strong emphasis on defense, with exception made with perhaps Luke Appling at shortstop, who I think is very valuable in the cap/small ball style. Usually like the strong outfield arms like Ichiro and Geronimo, but I avoid the very top of the range of small ball players like Speaker, Cobb, Duffy, Jackson.

Have won in the past with one stud pitcher - I used Maddux, but it really restricts the remainder of the team with an offset of 2 great starts in the playoffs.

Some great info here GKH, but trying to visualize what kind of pitching staff you wind up with for only $12M.....Would love to see a link to one of these teams. Still not convinced this is for me, although I have done pretty good in the $60 cap with player salary restrictions.
