No assists for Clemente?

No assists after 63 games for the (-6) Clemente. I have to believe this is because runners do not test him. Does anyone know how it works? Must a team's running be set at Aggressive or Super Aggressive to challenge him?

My same Clemente (-6) has 4 assists to go along with 4 errors in 84 games. Your Clemente has 7 errors already in lesser games? How does he commit more errors? Mine has as many errors as my other two outfielders combined - Musial and Snider, 4 between them - ?
You're probably right - HAL senses the futility in running on him so doesn't even bother. But dumb moves have never stopped HAL before!

I cannot speak for Hal, but I can tell you if we were playing those games head to head Clemente would have very few if any assists. There are probably very few circumstances where I would send the runner after subtracting that 6 from my chances.
This is a flaw in the OF throwing arm baserunning method. An extreme negative arm does not serve to increase assist so much as it serves to discourage challenges. But a runner who does not challenge does not score so there is value to that arm.

Not knowing how much value Clemente's arm mean is one missing statistic that would be helpful -to me outfielder defense base runner info is much more helpful and relevant than the base runner batter stats we have now.

3 reasons for no assists for Clemente:
1. Runners are not challenging him
2. Looks like he has 1 throwing error on the year (7 errors, 6 are from x-rolls), so obviously somebody is taking a chance
3. Runners are challenging him and beating the throw
Also, I don't remember all the adjustments for taking an extra base. I think you get +2 if there are 2 outs, also maybe another +2 if you are trying to take 3rd on a hit to RF. Again, these are vague recollections, but that would give a 17 runner a 1-15 chance of the extra base against Roberto if accurate.

Outside of this game, it happens.
I played Left-Center in softball, had a weak arm. Guy in RC had a cannon, could hit 2b on a fly flat footed, and 2 hop to home from the fence. I needed a cut-off man to reach second on a routine fly. 5 years running, I had a more assists than he did. He once went a 20 game season without. Same teams every year, they learn not to run on him, and take advantage of me. I didn't often stop a runner from scoring from second, but I got a lot more chances.

Clemente once threw out Lee May running home from 3rd base on a single to right.
"Me throw, you out!"~~~~ Roberto Clemente.
Sincerely,
Delivery Boy...

That is impressive. But wonder if we watched a replay if we would see May trotting in because he never imagined Clemente would bother throwing home on a routine single. Could have also just been the heat of battle. May may have hesitated because he thought Clemente might get to the fly ball. Then when he saw it drop instead of doing the smart thing and staying put adrenalin kicked in and he took off.
I imagine in real life runners try in situations where they know they shouldn't or they forget who is making that throw. In Strat one always knows and the decision to challenge or not is a coldly calculated one where the exact odds of being thrown out are known in advance. With that knowledge and time to think and make a decision we and Hal are less likely to challenge. A real life runner with emotions and the excitement of a live play unfolding has to make a split second decision.
On similar note I watched a replay this past summer where a hitter was thrown at first by the left fielder. Do not remember who the batter or fielder was. Shortstop jumped up for the ball and just missed it. But the runner thought he had caught it and thus did not run to first until he saw the ball being thrown to first by the LFer. By then it was too late.

That would have been a case of beer on my softball team.
Ground ball thru the legs = physical error, never a "fine" dumb things cost you beer.
