Glenn: Just took a look at the conference schedule and your credentials - very impressive. Just wondering what you think of the effectiveness of the "heart guards" available to little leaugers (my son is 9). Thanks for any thoughts! Ralph S. ("unclerowser" in Strat.)

Research has not proven any effectiveness of heart guards or other chest protection devices from reducing sudden death from baseballs. Here is USA Baseball's Position Statement on the subject (fyi, I am now the chairman of USA Baseball Medical & Safety Advisory Committee):

Does your son's league used reduced impact (softer) baseballs? This might be a better idea than chest protectors:
